SERVING & PROTECTING CHILDREN. No organization does it better than Susie's Place Child Advocacy Center with locations in Avon, Bloomington and Terre Haute. Their fundamental purpose is information-gathering in forensic interviews of children (from verbal to 18) who have been victims or witnesses of crimes. Because of the nature of this work, Susie's Place is open 24/7 every day of the year. Crime does not take a holiday. Rotarians were recently educated by the organization's new Chief Development Officer Cathy Stoll who had previously served on the SP board. In addition to conducting forensic interviews in the most comfortable, safe environment for the child, SP is developing a robust prevention education program managed by John Graham. In fact, they have provided this education to over 311,836 K-12 students between 2017 - 2024. Unfortunately, the need for the specialized service that SP provides just keeps growing. Having opened in 2009, they will have served the 20,000th reported child victim during 2026. Every child giving testimony is guided by skilled professionals in a room separate from the agencies needing the information: law enforcement, prosecutors, etc. The listeners can signal the interviewer with specific questions or to ask them to work for more detail. All of this is done without the awareness of the child. It is a discouraging reality that we need the kind of expert service Susie's Place provides. However, after listening to Cathy describe their process, all in the room were amazed and appreciative at the caring work they do. As with any nonprofit, they have needs. Please go to their website, learn more and see if you can be of help: www.susiesplace.org
There is so much more to their story.

ANNUAL DYW SUPPORT. Avon Rotarians have long dedicated time and money to support the growth experience provided by the annual Distinguished Young Women of Avon program. This year the club is sponsoring two participants who are active members of the Avon High School Interact Club which Rotary backs. Both Karsyn Hines and Yosana Mehari are thoroughly enjoying their DYW experience. Each day of DYW practice the girls get a bag of goodies and surprises to remind them they are supported. The night of the big event on August 1 they get another bag of kindness. This program changes lives by helping girls build confidence, improve communication skills, develop teamwork proficiency, enhance community connection, receive scholarship dollars and more. To assist in the skill development, for many years Rotarian Pam Lyons has lead an interview workshop to guide the participants in doing their very best for the Interview portion worth 25% of the final score. Rotary finds a variety of ways to cheer them on!

36th ANNUAL JOE DUGAN GOLF OUTING SUCCESS! Avon Rotarians have learned over the years that they can count on three things for this fundraiser: 1. Brad Hofmann at West Chase Golf Club will be ready; 2. Golfers will sign on; and 3. Community sponsors will always step up.
Here are highlights from this year's successful fundraiser:
Nearly 100 golfers competed. With 4 departments in the mix, the Top Cop traveling trophy will go to the Hendricks County Sheriff's Dept. Thanks to Greg Steuerwald, Sinclair Family Foundation, Hurst Impressions and Bob Curry's daughters Lori Young & Lynn Barrett for sponsoring cop teams. First place overall went to the Project A.N.G.E.L. team, 2nd to Blue & Co. and 3rd to the State Bank team. The tally of final results is not in yet, but it promises to be better than last year. Thanks to all sponsors of drink carts (Stifel Nicholaus and Tom & Julie Brady), lunch (the Joe Dugan Family), and 45 hole sponsors. Also, a big thanks goes to Spectrum Print and Marketing for donating brochures and PepsiCo for donating Gatorade. Event organizers Past Pres Ryan Sinclair and Secretary Melissa Calahan are feeling the relief of being done and the exhilaration of pulling off a successful fundraiser! Sincerest appreciation to all who sponsored and/or came to golf. We hope to see you back in 2027!

GO SALUKIS! Rotarian Mary Lofton welcomed her classmate from Southern Illinois University to share his career story, and we were captivated. Bruce Kopp, a longtime college friend of both Mary and her husband Chuck, from childhood had a fascination with broadcasting. He landed his first job after college in Evansville...moved from there to Grand Rapids...from there he came to Indianapolis each time improving his skills and broadening his on-air responsibilities. For 25 years Bruce was part of the Channel 13 Sunrise team along with Chuck Lofton at the weather helm. Though he enjoyed the job, he began to imagine life without an early morning call. He was offered an opportunity to become a media content creator for the Riley Children's Foundation using all the media skills and equipment he had acquired. This was immediately attractive to Bruce when he understood that the content he would be creating would help to provide programs, services, medical education and family support for Riley Children's Hospital. The foundation is a valued resource that helps to provide elements that the hospital could not fund. They are making a difference. Bruce shared one video he produced of a generous donor living on a Bedford farm who wanted to help the children of Riley. Her donation of the farm as a place for healing through open spaces, animal interaction, fresh air, etc. was highlighted beautifully in the heartfelt video. Another example of the foundation's funding is the financial support of teachers needed for long-term patients who would otherwise miss months of schooling. Bruce is proud of the work he is doing and enjoys the fact that much of his work can be done from home. Many Rotarians had their own "Riley stories" and were impressed to hear about this behind-the-scenes resource.
