On Monday afternoon, EAFD members were dispatched to a camper fire in the village of Caledonia that was threatening a nearby garage and neighboring residence. Responding as FAST, crews arrived and immediately integrated into fireground operations.

Members assisted with suppression efforts in addition to their FAST duties, helping bring the fire under control, and remained on scene to support salvage and overhaul before being released.

EAFD firefighters were alerted Saturday morning to a subject that was down and injured next to the waterfall in Paper Mill Park. Upon arrival, it was determined that a low angle rope rescue operation would be needed to rescue the subject. Several EAFD Rope Rescue members began setting up as additional personnel were summoned from Livingston County Special Operations as these incidents can be very manpower intensive. The 2 teams working together, affected the rescue within 25 minutes of arrival. Recently EAFD's rope rescue cache was completely replaced and upgraded, replacing some very old equipment. This marked the first incident where the new equipment was used to rescue a subject in need of this specialized service.

On April 27th, members of EAFD conducted a training drill focused on Low Angle Rope Rescue operations and Rescue Technician Basic (RTB) skills. The training was led by an EAFD member certified at the Rope Rescue Technician level, providing advanced instruction and oversight.

During the drill, members practiced critical skills including communication, anchor system setup, lowering a team of four attendants with a Stokes basket, patient packaging, and raising the team. These evolutions emphasized teamwork, coordination, and technical proficiency.

EAFD has recently upgraded its rope rescue capabilities with the purchase of new equipment, including CMC clutches, 11mm rope, harnesses, rescue helmets, pulleys, and anchor straps. This investment replaces outdated equipment and enhances the department’s ability to operate safely and effectively.

The combination of updated equipment and continued hands-on training plays a vital role in our mission to serve the community and maintain operational readiness.

A special thank you to the Office of Emergency Management - Livingston County, NY for providing a Rope Rescue Technician who assisted as a safety officer during the training.

This past week, several of our members traveled to FDIC and put in over 85 hours of hands-on and classroom training. They had the opportunity to learn from some of the top instructors in the country and are bringing that knowledge back to strengthen our department and better serve our community. Training topics included heavy extrication, gas emergencies, RIT operations, forcible entry, electric vehicle incidents, live fire training, and recruitment & retention.

We’re proud of their dedication and commitment to continuous improvement!

On Monday afternoon, EAFD firefighters were alerted as part of the Working Fire Dispatch to assist Mumford and Scottsville firefighters with a house fire on Wheatland Center Rd. Due to many void spaces in the large multi-family dwelling, the fire proved to be difficult to extinguish prompting a 3rd Alarm response from area departments. EAFD members assisted with search/rescue, vertical ventilation, and extinguishment until the fire was placed under control by Mumford Command.

Tuesday’s rainfall brought a high volume of calls and a wide range of challenges for our crews.

Over the past several days, EAFD members have assisted residents with flooded basements and responded to multiple EMS incidents. Tuesday evening proved especially demanding, with crews responding to two vehicles submerged in water with occupants trapped—requiring immediate water rescue—while also being dispatched to a separate incident where a vehicle had traveled approximately 100 feet off the interstate into a body of water.

All occupants involved were safely removed from their vehicles.

The vehicle on the interstate was later identified as an electric vehicle that had sustained damage and was submerged in water, requiring additional precautions during recovery operations.

We are proud of the dedication and professionalism our members continue to show in service to the community. Thank you to all who responded as well as our partners at the Lima Volunteer Fire Department for your assistance that evening!

On Sunday night just before halftime of the Super Bowl, York firefighters with mutual assistance from Caledonia for a Ladder and East Avon as the FAST were alerted to a farm on Stewart Rd. for a commercial building fire. The first arriving York Chief declared a working fire and requested a 2nd Alarm, bringing in many additional resources from the area.

East Avon firefighters from Engine 274 (Sackett Rd.) arrived and stretched a master-stream monitor off of York's Engine to assist their members with fire attack. Quad 276's crew (Rt. 15) arrived along with Pavilion's Tanker and both crews assisted Caledonia's crew with a large rural water supply operation and interior attack on the rear side of the building. EAFD split crews to provide a FAST, stretch an additional ground monitor to provide an interior attack at the front of the structure, and provided an officer to act as the Water Supply Officer for the duration incident.

Firefighters faced many challenges, most notably the sub-zero temperatures at the time of the fire, causing many issues. Lima firefighters were on hand to cover our district while we spent the night/early morning hours in York and as our apparatus spent much of Monday thawing out.
