You’ve heard of Bigfoot, but have you heard of the Leaping Loopy in our own backyard? In November 1870, reports circulated about a strange animal spotted in the woods near the village of Leicester.

A local newspaper published one man’s account of the creature. He said its tracks were more like those of a dog than a cat, and it had long hind legs, jumping over the ground instead of running.

Later nicknamed the “Leaping Loopy,” the creature avoided capture by hunters. The hunt became more serious after the beast viciously attacked a local doctor’s dog. Newspapers reported it “reared on its hind legs and struck with its fore feet, using them much as a man would use his hands and arms.”

No sightings of the Livingston County Bigfoot seem to have followed, but it had captured people’s attention. Based on the descriptions, one theory is that a kangaroo escaped from a passing circus, although no reports of such an event have been found.

Whether it was Bigfoot, a kangaroo, or some other creature, the story has been told and retold over time, eventually becoming folklore. Perhaps based on a kernel of truth, we may never know what lurked in the woods all those years ago, but we do know it evolved into a great story.
