Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

🚨 HIGH – EXTREME FIRE DANGER TODAY 🚨

We’re asking everyone to hold off on any outdoor burning right now. Conditions are extremely dry, and it won’t take much for a small fire to get out of control fast.

🔥 Most wildfires in North Carolina are caused by debris burning — don’t let today be the day it happens.

Even if you’ve burned safely before, today is not the day to risk it.

Let’s work together to keep our community and our firefighters safe. If you see smoke or fire, don’t hesitate to call it in.

Please share to help get the word out.

This morning, Chief Haddock had the opportunity to spend some time with a 2nd grade class at one of our local schools. He read a book with the students, talked about fire safety, and answered some great questions from the kids!

We discussed the importance of working smoke alarms, having an escape plan at home, and what to do in case of an emergency. The students were engaged and asked thoughtful questions about what firefighters do and how they can stay safe.

We enjoy opportunities like this to connect with our community and help educate the next generation about fire prevention and safety.

Thank you to the school staff for having us — and to the students for being such a great audience!
