Construction Notification - West Main Street over Nonacoicus Brook Bridge Replacement Project

This week, temporary traffic signals and barriers will be set at the West Main Street bridge.

Once temporary traffic signals are operational, Northern will begin “Stage 1” bridge reconstruction. Stage 1 involves reconstructing the southern side of the bridge, while a portion of the northern side of roadway (11’ wide minimum lane) remains open in a one-way alternating pattern.

Please note the following regarding Stage 1 bridge construction work:

Cars traveling around the work zone should expect delay. Please travel with caution.

Signs/message boards have been set in various locations directing trucks only to detour around the work zone. However, it is encouraged for all vehicles to seek alternate routes.

The only planned road closure is the intersection of Union Street at West Main Street. Residents normally using this intersection will be required to use either Mechanic Street or Mill Street.

Stage 1 bridge construction is anticipated to occur throughout 2026.

Work hours are limited to 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Police Officers will be on site to control traffic as required. Ayer DPW, along with its consulting engineer, will be on site inspecting the work. Updates will continue to be provided on the project webpage. If you have questions, please call DPW at 978-772-8240.
