BE HERE DAY is coming to Aztec Municipal Schools!

On Tuesday, September 8, we’re joining schools across New Mexico for Be Here Day, a statewide initiative focused on celebrating the importance of regular school attendance.

Every day a student is in school is another day to learn, connect, grow, and be part of their school community. We’re encouraging our students to show up, be present, and make every day count!

08/26/2026

Parents and student-athletes, I want to make sure everyone understands how Spring 2026 grades affect fall athletic eligibility and what we will be doing moving forward.

For most students, eligibility for the fall is based on the previous semester. Under NMAA requirements, a student generally must have earned a 2.0 GPA with no F’s during the preceding semester.

There are also several provisions that can affect individual situations, including the cumulative eligibility provision for students in grades 10–12, qualifying summer-school course replacement, and the fall-semester clean-slate provision.

One important exception involves freshmen. Incoming 9th graders who did not participate in high school sports as an 8th grader receive a fall-semester clean slate under NMAA rules.

I will review those situations individually when they apply.

Right now, we have approximately 248 student-athletes whose records need to be checked. Because the district changed Student Information Systems, this is also a new eligibility process for us this year. I am working through individual records as quickly and carefully as I can.

Technology is helping me build a much faster system for reviewing eligibility, but getting that system set up correctly takes time. In the meantime, coaches will be talking with athletes about grades this week.

I am asking parents to please review your student-athlete’s Spring 2026 semester grades as well. If you already know there may be an eligibility concern, please communicate with your coach or the Athletic Department so we can look at that situation.

If a student does not meet NMAA eligibility requirements from the spring semester, that student cannot participate in games or competitions until eligibility is regained. This matters beyond the individual athlete. Playing an academically ineligible athlete can put the entire team’s results at risk.

We still want those students involved. They should remain with their teams, continue practicing, attending, learning, improving, and participating in the program as permitted. The goal is to help them get academically eligible again while keeping them connected to their teammates and coaches.

An academically ineligible student may regain eligibility at the next regular marking period by earning at least a 2.0 GPA with NO F’s.

We will also begin weekly grade checks shortly for our student-athletes. These checks are intended to catch academic concerns early and give students an opportunity to address problems before they become eligibility issues.

Coaches will be communicating with athletes about their grades throughout the season. Maintaining eligibility is not just something we check once at the beginning of a season; it is an ongoing responsibility for our student-athletes.

We are working through a large number of records, and we want to make sure we handle each one correctly. Athletes, parents, coaches, and the Athletic Department all have a role in protecting eligibility.

Academics come first, and we want every Tiger able to compete the right way and eligible to play.

Go Tigers! 🐯
