This Internet Safety Month, we're sharing some tips to stay safe online 💻 and what to do if you are involved in a fraud, scam, or identity theft.
If you think your identity has been stolen, follow these steps to gain back control and recover:
- Place a fraud alert on your credit report
- Close fraudulent or tampered-with accounts
- Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) https://www.identitytheft.gov/
- Report theft to your local law enforcement agency by calling non-emergency dispatch. 505-334-6622

June is National Internet Safety Month and a good reminder to stay safe online. From scammers who are getting more sophisticated every day to personal information getting stolen to phishing attempts, there's a lot of reasons to keep your guard up online.
If you receive an unsolicited text, email, or phone call from what seems to be a trusted business (like Amazon, Walmart, etc.), institution (like your local bank or a credit card company), or even a governmental agency - take a pause, trust your gut, and verify.

We've received several reports of citizens (and even our deputies) getting these texts indicating that they are being summonsed to district court over "traffic violation summons". Our court system does not use text messaging to send official notices so you can be assured that these texts are FAKE from someone trying to SCAM you! ❌
Scammers are getting more sophisticated every day and will do whatever they can to scare and intimidate you into complying with their demands - to click on a link, call a phone number, send a gift card, etc. If something feels off about a communication you've received, it is most likely fraudulent.
