May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and with warmer weather bringing more riders to the road, the Azusa Police Department is reminding everyone to look twice and share the road.

Motorcycles can be harder to spot than other vehicles, which is why taking an extra second to check mirrors, blind spots, and intersections can make all the difference.

A few safety reminders for everyone:
🏍️ Drivers
• Check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes
• Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and motorcycles
• Don’t assume a rider is turning just because a signal is on—make sure before moving
🏍️ Motorcyclists
• Wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear
• Ride defensively and avoid blind spots
• Keep headlights on, even during daylight hours
• Make yourself visible with reflective gear when possible

Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, never drive or ride distracted or under the influence.

Let’s work together to keep our roads safe for everyone!

The Azusa Police Department proudly congratulates Special Service Officers Tinoco and Sanchez on their graduation from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Correctional Academy.

Over the course of this intensive nine-week academy, both officers received professional training focused on the legal complexities, operational responsibilities, and safety considerations associated with the operation and security of a custodial facility.

The Department would also like to extend special recognition to SSO Sanchez for earning the academy’s Top Academic Award, graduating with an outstanding overall test average of 96%. This achievement reflects exceptional discipline, commitment, and academic excellence.

As Special Service Officers assigned to the Azusa Police Department Jail, they now join a profession that requires professionalism, sound judgment, vigilance, and dedication to public service each and every day.

We are proud of their accomplishment, commitment, and hard work throughout the academy process. We wish both officers a long, safe, and successful career serving the Azusa community.

Congratulations, SSO Tinoco and SSO Sanchez.

Distracted Driving Enforcement – April Reminder

This April, the Azusa Police Department is increasing enforcement on distracted driving, with a focus on drivers using handheld phones behind the wheel.

Here’s what you need to know:

• It is illegal to hold your phone while driving, including for calls, texts, or apps.
• Violations can result in fines.
• A second offense within 36 months will add a point to your driving record.

“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone. That message can wait—your safety cannot.” – Corporal Jesse Landa

If you need to make a call or use directions, pull over to a safe location. Before driving, silence your phone or place it out of reach.

This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe.
