Friday, we lost a true legend in law enforcement, Joe Maffei.

Years before I began my own law enforcement career, I met Joe and had the privilege of spending time with the entire Maffei family. Joe was a highly professional lawman who was well known and deeply respected by both his fellow officers and the citizens he served.

The legendary stories of Joe, Bill Scott, Craig Tramonte, the Millos, and so many other GPD greats certainly played a part in inspiring me to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Joe retired from GPD shortly before I was hired as a GPD officer. As a rookie going through the field training program, you quickly learn that every FTO has their own style of policing. By the end of training, you begin developing your own style by taking bits and pieces from each officer who helped train and influence you.

Joe was never my FTO, but I can tell you that conversations with him on his back porch over a cold b**r helped shape and influence the kind of police officer I became.

Joe was a mentor to many, always willing to share his wisdom, whether it was on the streets, during a visit in the lobby of the federal courthouse, sitting on the back porch, or around the deer camp.

Joe Maffei will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on through the officers he influenced, the people he served, and the stories that will continue to be told around campfires for years to come; including classics like โ€œApple Sauceโ€ and โ€œThe Blister.โ€

Kathryn and I send our deepest condolences to the entire Maffei family.

Rest easy, Joe Maffei #637. Weโ€™ve got it from here.

The Fourth of July is more than fireworks, backyard cookouts, and waving the American flag. It marks the day our nationโ€™s founders declared that liberty, freedom, and self-government were worth fighting for.

This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate Americaโ€™s 250th birthday; a milestone honoring two and a half centuries of resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the American people.

As we gather with family and friends, let us remember those who came before us, those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms, and the men and women who continue to serve and protect our communities every day.

From Constable Blake Patton & all of us at the ๐Ÿ ๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ž, we wish you and your family a safe, joyful, and memorable Independence Day.

Congratulations to Galveston County Pct. 1 Deputy Constable Mac Sanford on receiving the 2026 Public Service Award at the TCOLE Law Enforcement Achievement Awards Ceremony.

Deputy Sanford was recognized for his unwavering commitment to serving the citizens of Galveston County through the Sanford Clause, maintaining blessing boxes throughout the county, and organizing efforts to wrap water pipes for elderly and disabled residents during winter freezes.

Deputy Sanford exemplifies what it means to serve beyond the badge. His compassion, dedication, and selfless service have made a lasting impact on our community, and this recognition is well deserved.

The ceremony itself was a truly humbling experience. TEXAS CITY MAN ARRESTED FOR DISTRIBUTING SYNTHETIC NARCOTICS INTO TEXAS PRISONS

On June 2, 2026, deputies with the Galveston County Precinct 1 Constableโ€™s Office assisted the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force with the arrest of Deidrick Capers at his residence in Texas City.

The arrest stems from an investigation conducted by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Office of Inspector General and the United States Postal Inspection Service. As a result of that investigation, authorities obtained an arrest warrant out of Dallas County charging Capers with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 2-A, 1-4 grams, with a bond set at $50,000.

Investigators determined that Capers was allegedly mailing synthetic narcotics, commonly known as K2, into correctional facilities across Texas. K2 has been linked to numerous overdoses, medical emergencies, and deaths in correctional facilities throughout the country.

Following the arrest, investigators executed a search warrant at Capersโ€™ residence. During the search, deputies recovered more than 80 grams of synthetic narcotics and discovered a small laboratory used to prepare and package the drug for distribution.

As a result of the evidence recovered, the Galveston County Precinct 1 Constableโ€™s Office additionally charged Capers with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 2-A, 4-400 grams. Bond on that charge was set at $150,000.

Capers was booked into the Galveston County Jail. Additional charges from other jurisdictions are expected as the investigation continues.

The Galveston County Precinct 1 Constableโ€™s Office remains committed to working alongside our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to combat the distribution of dangerous narcotics and protect the safety of our communities
