So adorable 🥹

It’s squirrel-a-polooza over here at West Sound Wildlife Shelter! Due to a short gestation period of about 5 weeks, female squirrels typically have two litters of kits per year- one in early spring and one in late summer/early fall. Litter sizes typically range from two to five kits, and these babies will stay with mom until they are fully independent at about 12 weeks old. We are currently taking care of about 26 baby squirrels, all at different stages of development. When in our care, we feed formula specific to their age and dietary needs multiple times per day, and provide a natural solid diet to help them wean as they get older. Once they are fully weaned, they will spend some time weather conditioning in an outdoor enclosure, then be released back into the wild!

So hungry!!

Did you know that some of our youngest patients get fed every 15 minutes all day long? When it comes to baby birds, their mother would be constantly caring for them in the wild from sunup to sundown, bringing food at regular intervals and feeding it directly into their mouths. To ensure the best success for our little feathered friends, we stick to this schedule to replicate the process as closely as possible. As the chicks grow, we begin to decrease the amount of feedings they get as we help them learn to self feed. It seems like this little robin would prefer us to hand feed him forever!

Eagles Galore!

We currently have three juvenile Bald Eagles in care here at West Sound Wildlife Shelter! All three of these birds came in at separate time, but with very similar stories. They had all been found grounded and emaciated, but had no physical injuries. This is not uncommon for us to see at this time of year- as these young raptors fledge, sometimes they struggle to feed themselves once leaving the nest. Eagles do not teach their young to hunt, making it so these birds have to rely on their innate prey drive and observation of others to figure it out for themselves. It’s during this process that juveniles are often found struggling. Luckily for these three, they were found and brought to us before it was too late. While in care, we provide these eagles with plentiful food and large enclosures so they can regain weight and muscle mass to help prepare them for release!

Even fishermen need time on the shore!

Meet Osprey 26-743! This bird was brought to us after being found grounded in the middle of the road in Seattle. After examination and x-rays, we found a displacement of the coracoid, making it so he was unable to gain proper liftoff. Luckily for him, the injury is small enough that, with time, it would be able to heal properly. In the past few weeks, we have had the privilege of watching him progress from only being able to perch on the ground to flying over our heads! With a bit more time, he’ll be flying confidently enough to be released just in time to migrate with his species down to South America in late August!
