Wow! The inaugural and "1st Annual Helpline House Chopped Challenge" has been in full swing with the hundreds of guests attending our Helpline Housewarming this afternoon, from 1-4.

Many thanks to Chef and Author Greg Atkinson for hosting and emcee'ing--and to Bainbridge Island Chefs Mira Rosenkotz, Jim White and Tim Shelly/Co-Chef Kari Butterfield for cooking up some beautifully, creative dishes inspired by the food items you'd find right here on our Helpline House shelves.

Mira created "Cauliflower Wings" with a Tangy Buttermilk Ranch Sauce." Jim spun out "Gluten Free Lumpia." And Tim and Kari served up "Helpline House Cowboy Caviar." We love our Bainbridge Island Chefs and thank them for their generosity of spirit in joining us today! Stop by to get the recipes and inspiration!

A huge THANK YOU to the incredible team from Windermere Bainbridge Island for spending part of your day volunteering with us at Helpline House!

As we prepare to open the doors of our new building, there has been no shortage of boxes, shelving, supplies, and heavy things that somehow needed to move from Point A to Point B. Thankfully, the Windermere crew showed up ready to work and tackled some serious heavy lifting to help make our move possible.

Community support like this is what makes Bainbridge Island such a special place. We are so grateful for your time, energy, positive attitudes, and willingness to roll up your sleeves and jump right in.

Helpline House is on the verge of moving into its new 12,750-square foot headquarters on Knechtel Way on June 8. Connie Bye wrote about the organization’s amazing and ongoing work in this past fall’s issue (Building to Meet a Greater Need, page 52), diving into plans for the nonprofit’s expansion. We recently got to take a hardhat tour with Executive Director Maria Metzler, Communications and Development Manager Erica Beyer, board of directors member and VP of New Building Construction Ralph Spillinger, and Phil Kvamme, Washington Patriot Construction Manager, who showed us the state-of-the-art building which will not only supply food to those in need but will also provide social services and serve as a community hub.
“I remain humbled and impressed that our community cares so deeply for one another that it came together to make this needed space a reality,” said Metzler. “This new building reflects what our community stands for—being there for our neighbors.”
The public is invited to the Helpline Housewarming celebration on June 7, beginning at 1 p.m. for the ribbon cutting followed by the doors opening. Guests can look forward to treats and lemonade, activities and a “Chopped Challenge” chef demonstration. More info is available at helplinehouse.org

Volunteer Spotlight: Sarah!

Meet Sarah, one of our amazing Monday morning Food Bank Desk volunteers! Sarah has been part of the Helpline House family for over three years and brings a warm smile to everyone she greets.

When she's not volunteering, Sarah is passionate about Olympic weightlifting and even coaches part-time at a local gym. She also founded a nonprofit running program for girls, helping young people build confidence, strength, and independence.

Her favorite place on Bainbridge? Her backyard oasis complete with an in-ground pool. And while some people reach for mac and cheese, Sarah's comfort food is a giant bowl of fresh salad greens!

Sarah says one of the best parts of volunteering is connecting with clients and spending time with her wonderful fellow food bank desk volunteers each Monday morning.

Thank you, Sarah, for your dedication, kindness, and the positive energy you bring to Helpline House every week!

As Helpline House prepares to move into our new home, you may notice that food bank selection is a little more limited during the week of June 1st. We’re busy packing, moving, organizing, and getting everything ready for an exciting new chapter!

To help make the final transition, our current location will close at 12:30 PM on Friday, June 5th, so our team and volunteers can move the last of our inventory and equipment to the new building.

While some shelves may look a little lighter than usual this week, rest assured—we’re saving our best stocking efforts for our grand opening on Monday, June 8th. Our new food bank will be fully stocked, freshly organized, and ready to welcome clients with an even better shopping experience.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make this transition. We can’t wait to open our doors and show you what we’ve been working so hard to create!

New Location Opens: June 8, 2026
Food Bank Opens: 10:00 AM

See you soon in our new home!
