🌈 Happy Pride to all who celebrate today, all month and beyond. At BCLD, we’re committed to providing a variety of materials to support your family values and traditions—and help you learn about others.

Observed each June, Pride commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising and decades of civil rights advocacy for nondiscrimination. Pride Month is a time to highlight works and achievements by and about the LGBTQIA+ community, and honor the ongoing efforts seeking liberty and justice. It's also a reminder that everyone deserves fair and respectful service and support from government agencies --especially at their library, regardless of background or beliefs.

Happy Flag Day, and National Flag Week!

June 14 commemorates the Second Continental Congress's official adoption of the "Stars and Stripes" as the official U.S. flag in 1777.

Our library proudly displays the US flag every day, as well as copies of the US Constitution and First Amendment in recognition of our vital intellectual freedom rights and focus on self-determination, liberty, and justice for all.

Happy Flag Day!

Among the museum's vast collection of flags, perhaps the most recognizable is the Star-Spangled Banner.

It flew over Fort McHenry the morning after the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem that would later become the national anthem of the United States.

Baker County libraries will be closed on Thursday, June 19 for the Juneteenth holiday.

What is Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and was able to inform the enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. No one had told them before that President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years prior... on January 1, 1863, and General Lee had surrendered two months prior.
This momentous occasion has been celebrated as Juneteenth — a combination of June and 19 — for over 150 years.
