End of watch June 23, 1952

Officer William C. Foote, 33, was returning from a special traffic control assignment at the Salinas Rodeo when his motorcycle crashed head-on into another vehicle.

Officers traveling with Foote believed a tire blowout or a crack in the pavement caused the patrolman to lose control and swerve into the path of the oncoming car.

Foote, who joined the CHP in 1948, had just returned to the Patrol after a stint as a Marine Corps Reservist in the Korean War.

🏆👏 CHP Bakersfield Area Officers Receive MADD Recognition Awards👏🏆

Today, CHP Bakersfield participated in the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Awards Ceremony, where our officers were recognized for their outstanding commitment to keeping our communities safe.

These awards highlight the dedication, professionalism, and tireless efforts of our officers in removing impaired drivers from our roadways and working to prevent tragedies caused by impaired driving.

We congratulate all of the award recipients and thank MADD California for their continued partnership and advocacy in the fight against impaired driving.

Medal of Valor Recipient 🏅👏🏻

Help us congratulate Officer Black who received the Gold Medal of Valor for preventing a potentially catastrophic crash during a DUI checkpoint operation here in Bakersfield.

On Dec. 14, 2024, CHP Bakersfield personnel and Explorers were setting up a DUI checkpoint on Calloway Drive when a vehicle entered the closed roadway and headed directly toward officers and volunteers on foot. Recognizing the imminent danger, Officer Black positioned his patrol vehicle between the oncoming car and the personnel ahead of him. The vehicle struck his patrol car, but Officer Black maneuvered to reduce the impact and protect those in harm’s way. His actions prevented serious injury or loss of life.

Tip-A-Cop Law Enforcement Special Olympics fundraiser was a success. 🏅👏🏻

Yesterday, we teamed up with Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Probation Department in an effort to collect donations to support our local athletes. Thank you to all who attended. A huge thank you to California Pizza Kitchen for being our host restaurant and allowing local law enforcement to be your servers. We had a great time as always and thank you for all the donations.

A hot car can turn deadly in minutes.

🌡️ Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
👶 On average, 37 children die each year from heatstroke in vehicles.
🚗 Even on a 60-degree day, a child can die in a hot car.

Look before you lock. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, not even for a moment.

FELONY EVADING/ RECKLESS DRIVING ❗️🚨

One of our officers observed the driver of this Honda CBR motorcycle at high speeds and attempted to conduct an enforcement stop. The driver failed to field and continued at speeds over 120 mph northbound on SR-99. The driver eventually yielded to the right shoulder where he was taken into custody and later booked into Lerdo Jail. His motorcycle was impounded.

We want to remind you, if stopped, do not attempt to evade. It can lead to severe injury or death, loss of vehicle, and increased risk to other motorists. Remember, speeding puts everyone at risk and accounts for 30% of all crashes statewide.

CHP Bakersfield Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) results:

•Speeding citations: 262
•Seatbelt citations: 79
•DUI arrests: 32
•All other citations: 182

During the final hours of our HEP the driver of the Dodge pictured above was traveling southbound on SR-99, south of Airport Drive at 134 mph. The driver was stopped and consequently arrested for reckless driving and the Dodge was impounded.

We want to urge drivers to slow down, drive responsibly, and never drive impaired.
