Shafter Falls in D-V Baseball Finals

Because of the comeback nature of his program, Shafter baseball coach David Schwartz’ faith never wavered until the final out.
But for the second consecutive season, the top-seeded Generals fell in the Central Section Division V championships, this time to No. 2 Minarets of O’Neals 10-9 on Friday evening at Valley Strong Ballpark in Visalia.
It was the third consecutive trip to the D-V finals for Shafter after winning the title in 2024.
“We’re a tough team. That’s the kind of game we expect to be in every time we go on the field,” Schwartz said. “Minarets is a great team, a great pitcher and all-around good team. We knew it was going to be a battle.”
And was it ever.
Both teams came into the finals averaging double-digit runs in the playoffs.
The Mustangs got on the board with two runs in the top of the first but Shafter took a 4-3 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.
Shafter senior Andy Gomez and Minarets junior Jamie Spurgeon both settled in on the mound before the bats came alive for both programs.
Spurgeon, a nationally recruited tight end for the Minarets football team, was a home run away from the cycle for the Mustangs.
Shafter senior Lukas Pena came up in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runners on and two RBIs in his previous four plate appearances, hit a line drive to right field with two outs, scoring two runs to cut the Minarets lead to one run, giving the Generals hope that their season would not end on the big stage for a second consecutive season.
Despite committing five fielding errors, the Generals had the game-tying run in scoring position before a fly ball on the next at-bat ended the game.
“That’s how we’ve hit all year. We’ve been down six, seven, eight runs and battled back,” Schwartz said. “So I didn’t feel the pressure in that situation because I knew who these guys are and what they are capable of.”

Porter, Howard Lead Locals At Masters

Liberty freshman Ally Bennett didn’t know how the next 10 seconds of her life were going to go, but she knew it was up to her to find the strength needed.
At the Central Section Masters Track and Field Championships at Buchanan in Clovis, Bennett was in third place in the final 30 meters of the 1,600-meter girls race when she kicked it into gear and bested the top-two runners in the final 10 meters for the title in a time of 4 minutes, 54.35 seconds, a personal-best and the second fastest time in the section this season.
“It makes me feel really good knowing that can I just PR and win the race,” Bennett said. “In the last 100 yards, I didn’t know how to keep going. Felt like I was going to pass out. But I saw the finish line and just kept going.”
Her teammate, Madelyn Porter was in a totally different situation. The junior who already had the top girls pole vault mark at 12-6, cleared 12-8 for the section title, but wanted more.
With the state’s top mark at 13-2, Porter wanted to give it a go, but just clipped the bar on her second attempt knowing the title was already in hand.
“I cleared it, but I just came down on the bar,” Porter said. “I know I can clear 13-2, and I stopped in the middle of it to run the hurdles.”
Porter also qualified for state in the girls 100 hurdles, placing third in a time of 14.80 seconds.
The meet began with high hopes for Bakersfield senior sprinter Jalen Ford as he anchored the Drillers to a Masters title in the boys 400 relay in 41.62 seconds.
But 90 minutes later, Ford slowed down in the final 20 meters in the 100 and finished the race grabbing his hamstring.
Shafter senior Jocelyn Pierucci repeated as the Masters girls discus champion at 151-1, besting her PR by four feet that she previously set at Masters last season.
Stockdale junior Nevaeh Howard won the girls 100 in 11.74 second and qualified for state in the 200.
