⚡️Duke Outage Update⚡️

After this last string of electrical outages with Duke I asked the county manager to write up a letter and send it to them on behalf of the county and the citizens being affected by the constant outages.
Also to serve as a reminder that this issue was previously brought up before Helene and still needed to be addressed.

Today I heard back from the government relations manger and she said she would have a more detail report for me to share with the citizens early next week, but called to inform me they had received the county letter in addition to the citizens concerns about the issue.

Duke reviewed the outage data and sent crews out on Monday and drove all the way up to the end of Cane Creek. She said they assessed several trees that needed to be cut to clear around the lines and would be cutting them in the near future as well as replacing animal guards. They are also working on a substation in Spruce Pine behind Deyton to help with the outage issues and she will be attending a commissioner meeting in the near future.

I will follow up when I hear more information.

Locust Street: Closed beginning at 4:00 PM from INKED to the intersection of Oak Avenue at Spruce Pint. Traffic may enter Locust from the west and u-turn in front of INKED during this closure.

Friday July 3, 2026
Locust Street: From Link Street to Oak Avenue at Spruce Pint closed 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM. No access from Topaz Street or Crystal Street. Oak Avenue: Closed 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM from the Highland Avenue bridge to 50's Classic Diner.

CONTRACT PROJECT OPPORTUNITY FOR TEMPORARY OFFICES AT THE FORMER BOWMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Mitchell County is seeking bids on the renovation of space in the former Bowman Middle School for temporary offices for county government. Bids will include labor, materials, equipment, supervision, insurance, taxes, permits, tools, and incidentals to complete the work. The deadline to apply is June 26 2026.

ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES FOR MCAR FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT

Mitchell County, North Carolina, is requesting Statements of Qualifications (SOQ) from qualified architectural firms to provide professional architectural design and related services for the Mitchell County Animal Rescue Facility Improvements Project located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The project will involve evaluation of an existing animal shelter facility originally constructed in 1994, including planning, redesign, renovation, and potential building additions. The selected firm will assist Mitchell County with facility assessment, programming, design, permitting, bidding, and construction administration services. The deadline to apply is July 10, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
