2026-2027 PROPOSED BUDGET MESSAGE

The proposed 2026-2027 Mitchell County Budget has been released for public consideration. A copy of the Budget Message from County Manager Allen Cook can be viewed at the link below.

The full budget will be on display at the Mitchell County Administration office, and a public hearing is scheduled during the regular Commission Meeting on June 1, 2026, at 6:30 pm.

The Beans Creek Fire is now 100% contained. Melton Branch Road and the housing community of Shootout Mountain have returned to normal status.

We encourage residents residents to remain mindful of wildfire safety:
Avoid outdoor burning during windy or dry conditions
Never leave burn piles unattended
Properly extinguish campfires and smoking materials
Report smoke or fire immediately to 911

We are incredibly thankful for the dedicated firefighters, emergency responders, NC Forest Service personnel, volunteers, and community members who worked together throughout this incident.

As we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country, Mitchell County Government offices will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day. Offices will resume regular operations at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 26.

🚨 BEANS CREEK BRUSH FIRE UPDATE 🚨

The Beans Creek Brush Fire is now at 90% containment.

Melton Branch Road and the housing community of Shootout Mountain will remain under a β€œREADY” status according to the Ready, Set, Go Wildfire Action Plan.

A READY status means residents should stay aware of fire conditions, review evacuation plans, and be prepared to act if conditions change.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON PPDR - MAY 21, 2026

Please note that we announced that the first 100 requests for Private Property Debris Removal has been approved by FEMA. There WILL be additional approvals from FEMA from the requests that have been submitted. We apologize for the confusion from the post wording announced earlier. You can find it below:

PRIVATE PROPERTY DEBRIS REMOVAL UPDATE

State officials have announced that work on Private Property Debris Removal is resuming by the end of May. FEMA has approved 100 of the 1,000 requests for PPDR in Mitchell County. so cleanup on those approved will begin after the Memorial Day weekend. You will start seeing Crowder Gulf cleanup machinery return to the county shortly. More FEMA approvals are coming and will be released soon.
