🧠 What Dementia Sees

One of the most difficult parts of dementia is that we often assume our loved one is experiencing the world the same way we are.

But what if they are not?

A dark rug may look like a hole in the floor.

A mirror may reflect what appears to be a stranger standing in the room.

A dim hallway may feel unsafe or threatening.

A busy pattern on a carpet, bedspread, or chair may create visual confusion that overwhelms the brain.

When we understand this, something important happens.

We stop asking, “Why are they doing that?”

And we start asking, “What might they be experiencing?”

Many behaviors that appear stubborn, irrational, or resistant are often attempts to make sense of a world that no longer looks predictable or safe.

This is why the environment matters so much in dementia care.

Good lighting. Reduced clutter. Strong visual contrast. Familiar surroundings. Calm spaces.

Small changes can reduce fear, increase confidence, and help a person maintain independence for longer.

Dementia care is not always about changing the person.

Often, it is about changing the environment around them.

When we stop seeing behavior as a problem and begin seeing it as communication, we move closer to the heart of person-centered care.

Because sometimes the challenge is not what the person sees.

It is understanding how the changing brain interprets what is seen.
