This is one of the longer spring wildland seasons we have seen in a long time and the 7 day Forcast is not showing much rain to come. The best home defense against wildland fires is preparation. Check out this guide and do what you can to protect your home. The more you do, the quicker and easier we can protect your home.

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

Good try Helene, but you can’t stop Halloween, not in this town.

As part of Bakersville’s Merchant Halloween on October 31st, Station 3 will be grilling hot dogs, passing out candy and decorating pumpkins.

Stop on by at the end or make us your first stop. It’s all free, and we’ll be decorating pumpkins until we run out. Also, fire fighters give the best candy, just say’n.

See you all there, 5-7pm October 31st!

It’s tough right now but hard times make for a hard people. As we stay with you and try our best to to help along the way, our members are trying to pick up their own pieces. We’ve had some inquiries as to how and donate to help the department so we created a “go fund me” page to help the firefighters hit worse by the storm.

If you are struggling in any way shape or form, please do not donate. We will never ask you to compromise your lifestyle for us. These times were hard before the storm, and even worse afterwards. We need you to be safe, complete and rebuild what’s yours.

For those looking to make a donation, thank you! Your donation will go a long way in helping our firefighters, some who have barely seen a bed since it all started, start to rebuild. The Bakersville Fire Department Board will make the final decision as to how the funds are divided amongst the firefighters based on total loss.

Thank you all, stay safe out there Bakersville, keep those American Flags flying and show the world how Appalachians endure.

Sending you this from Tennessee and we hope you can view this soon.

“She's gettin' thread bare, and she's wearing thin
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in
'Cause she's been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more"
So we raise her up every morning
We take her down every night
We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her up right
On second thought, I do like to brag
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that ragged old flag”

-Johnny Cash

Stay strong Bakersville. We’ve been through these waters before, and we know you all got a whole lot more!

From Mitchell County, NC Government :

Important information from Mitchell County Emergency Management and County Manager Allen Cook

This is a dangerous storm and we will likely see extreme flooding, damaging winds, and the possibility of landslides. DO NOT TRAVEL unless it is absolutely necessary. Trees may be down in roads and there could be washouts, flooding, and other problems that may be hard to see in the darkness. Stay in a safe location until the storm passes.

If you are impacted by flooding or need to relocate, please call 911 for assistance and resources.

If you have friends, neighbors, or relatives in flood-prone areas, please encourage them to seek higher ground and shelter now before conditions worsen.

Please have several ways you can receive warnings and alerts in addition to a cell phone. A battery-powered radio tuned to a local station, a television, or other communication device are good ways to stay informed.

Mitchell County will be providing shelters for anyone who feels they are in danger. The shelters are located at The Beacon Center at First United Methodist Church just off Highway 226 in Spruce Pine, a Red Cross-operated shelter at the Mitchell High School gymnasium in Ledger,

Be aware that your electric generator could injure line workers if it is not properly installed and they restore your electricity.

Our emergency responders are ready to assist if there are problems, but we encourage everyone to take action now to protect yourself and your loved ones. Don’t wait until there are floodwaters or other issues. This will help all of us!

You all know what’s going on, if not, well….you might wanna look out the window. Hurricane Helene is taking its northerly route straight toward us. We are getting our safety briefing at the department at 6:30 and will have fire fighters on standby to assist.

Here are some things we need you to do to help us!

1. Call your relatives and relay the following information to them.

2. Stay off the roads. If you have to drive, and you come to a flooded road, turn around, don’t drown!

It only takes 6 inches of fast moving water to knock down a fully grown man. 24 inches of fast moving water is enough to displace most vehicles.

Water may look calm but you don’t know what lies beneath. Culverts, bridges and roads near rivers and creeks are susceptible to washout leaving large and deep holes that can swallow cars.

3. Avoid downed trees and power lines. Do not go near a downed power line. Report it and let the power company do what they get paid to do.

4. Do not play in flood waters as they can carry waste water from septic systems.

5. If you need emergency services, 911 is operating and will dispatch the services needed.

We are here for you, Bakersville! We will get through this as we always do. Flood waters will rise, but they will recede. Our spirits will recede, but will rise! Stay strong and stay safe, Mountaineers. We’ll see you on the other side.
