Yesterday at our council meeting, I shared a Declaration of Friendship between Bal Harbour Village and the Druze community of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, Israel. I had the honor of meeting their religious leader, Sheik Taher Abu Saleh, and his son Murhaf during a recent visit. This declaration marks the beginning of a meaningful relationship rooted in shared values of peace, community, and mutual respect. We look forward to continued dialogue, connection, and future visits.

At Tuesday’s Council Meeting, we issued a proclamation establishing our first Sister City relationship with Hof HaCarmel. I am proud to have championed this effort in collaboration with the Consul General of Israel, Maor Elbaz-Starinsky, and Hof HaCarmel’s Mayor Asif Izak. This partnership opens doors for cultural exchange and collaboration in tourism and public service. This vibrant coastal community welcomed us warmly during our recent visit, and our prayers are with the region during these challenging times.

At this solemn and challenging time, I stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and unequivocally condemn all forms of terrorism and hatred. As a member of a community that deeply values freedom, tolerance, and human dignity, I recognize these shared principles as the foundation of our enduring bond with the people of Israel. My family and I are keeping all those in harm’s way in our thoughts and prayers, and we join countless others around the world in hoping for peace, strength, and healing.

I condemn the blatant act of antisemitism and terrorism that occurred last night in Washington, D.C. The murders of two Israeli Embassy staff outside the Capital Jewish Museum shock the conscience. Sarah Milgrim, an American, and Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, are in my thoughts and prayers. My family and I extend our deepest condolences to their families and the Embassy community. The person responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Israelis and Jews being targeted in the bastion of democracy cannot be tolerated. Combating the international surge in antisemitism and anti-Israel hatred is a priority for all of us. This represents the dangers of the pro-Hamas antisemitic terrorist movement. Bal Harbour Village rejects all hatred and the anti-American pro-Hamas antisemitic terrorist movement that has infiltrated our youth and country. I stand in unwavering solidarity with my community and with Israel.

It is with a heavy heart that we remember and honor the passing of Rabbi Sholom Dovber Lipskar, a true spiritual leader and pillar of the Bal Harbour community.

His legacy is woven into the very fabric of our Village—through his tireless advocacy, his commitment to justice, and the kindness he extended to all. Rabbi Lipskar inspired not only faith, but action—and we are better as a community because of his presence among us.

As a mark of respect and gratitude, the Village of Bal Harbour will fly flags at half-staff in his memory. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.

While on a family trip to Israel, I had the pleasure of visiting the Hof HaCarmel region. I am proud that Bal Harbour Village entered into a sister city agreement last year with the Hof HaCarmel Regional Council and that I had the opportunity to meet with their Mayor Asif Izek and Assistant Mayor Liat Shahar Mizrachi in Ein Hod this week. I am looking forward to our sister city relationship, which is intended to foster the exchange of best practices between our communities, enabling us to learn from one another and implement strategies that enhance governance, economic development, and cultural understanding.
