🕯️Five years have passed, but the memory of Captain Thomas (“Roydsy”) Royds remains as strong as ever.🕯️

Today, we remember a firefighter, a brother, a mentor, and a friend whose selfless service, larger-than-life personality, and unwavering dedication to others continue to inspire us every day.

Captain Royds made the ultimate sacrifice in the Line of Duty on July 24, 2021, while operating on the Schuylkill Expressway. Early that morning, Captain Royds was serving with Belmont Hills Fire Company when crews from Belmont Hills, Gladwyne Volunteer Fire Company, Narberth Ambulance and the PA State Police responded to the incident.

Captain Royds’ untimely death left an unfillable void, and his absence continues to be felt across the three firehouses he proudly called home: Union Fire Association, Belmont Hills Fire Company, and Clifton Heights Fire Company.

He wasn’t just someone who wore the uniform. He embodied the very best of the fire service. Whether answering alarms, mentoring younger members, or simply making everyone around him smile, Captain Royds left an impact that time can never erase.

As we mark the fifth anniversary of his passing, we remember not only the day we lost him, but also the countless lives he touched through his kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his fellow firefighters and the communities he so faithfully served.

Today, our thoughts are with Captain Royds’ family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and serving beside him.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts. We miss you every day. Not a day goes by that we don’t think of you. Thank you for your sacrifice, your friendship, and your example. We will never forget you. Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.

🕯️ Exactly five years ago at this very moment, Lower Merion Firefighter Sean DeMuynck was dispatched to what would become his final call.

A Canadian citizen, Sean had come to Lower Merion to volunteer while his wife, Melissa, completed her fellowship at Penn.

Sean and Melissa were scheduled to return home to Canada the following morning, on July 5, 2021. Instead, during the late hours of July 4, Sean responded to a house fire that had been sparked by fireworks. Tragically, he was killed in the line of duty while serving the community he had so selflessly embraced.

Five years later, Sean’s courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to helping others continue to inspire firefighters and first responders everywhere.

May Sean’s memory forever be a blessing, and may his family know no more sorrow.

Monday night’s monthly live burn drill focused on sharpening the skills our firefighters rely on when seconds matter most. Crews started with the door prop, practicing forcible entry quickly and efficiently. Then entering the burn tower, where firefighters conducted hose evolutions; advancing lines through smoke-filled rooms to locate and suppress the fire. We also practiced searching for victims.

These monthly live fire drills are an essential part of our training program, providing firefighters with the closest experience possible to real-world fireground conditions in a controlled environment. The more we train, the better prepared we are to protect the community we proudly serve. 🚒🔥

Earlier today, a crew of five firefighters from UFA responded on the ladder to assist at a reported fire in Penn Wynne’s local on Greywall Lane. Upon arrival, Ladder 28 staged and stood by in the manpower pool for additional assignments as needed before assisting Engine 25 with packing up supply line.

Great teamwork and cooperation by all companies on scene.

Yesterday, Station 28 responded to two separate vehicle accident calls. On the first incident, Engine 28 acted as a protective blocker for first responders working on scene while also assisting with traffic control to help ensure the safety of everyone involved. During the second call upon arrival it was determined that luckily no fire services were needed.

Station 28 is always looking for dedicated volunteers to join our team—if you’re interested, please feel free to stop by on Monday nights at 6:30pm to learn more!
