Update on Federal Unemployment:

Returns filed with unemployment benefits prior to the $10,200 exclusion should not amend. The IRS has indicated it will refigure taxes on these returns and adjust the taxpayer's account accordingly. The IRS will then send any refund amount to the taxpayer directly.

For returns that have yet to be filed, we are still waiting on confirmation on the states conformity.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Tuesday!

Last week, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 was signed into law and within that bill, there was a provision making the first $10,200 of unemployment compensation nontaxable.

As of today, March 16th, 2021, we are still waiting to hear how the IRS will handle previously filed tax returns that have unemployment compensation and are still waiting to hear how the individual states will conform to the federal ruling.

With that, we are waiting to take action on previously filed returns with unemployment compensation and are holding returns with unemployment compensation that we have not yet filed until we know more.

We are hoping to know more within the week and will keep you up to date.

Have a great Tuesday!

Hello Everyone!

We hope you are all doing well.

On Saturday, the Senate approved the new $1.9 trillion economic stimulus plan.

There is a lot of takeaways from this bill and we are still waiting on waiting on dialogue from the IRS as they await the House's ratification of the bill.

Once we know more, we will update you on how the bill will pertain to the 2020 tax season.

In the meantime, here is an article that goes through the bill better than I could.

The measure passed by the Senate, and headed to the House for final approval before going to President Biden’s desk, contains money for direct checks, jobless benefits, state and local aid, and more.

Happy Tuesday!

For our second update leading up to this tax season we wanted to make you aware of some scam calling we have been made aware of.

Because of the Economic Impact Payments and potential refunds you may receive from your tax returns, some people have reported getting calls from the "FBI" or the "IRS" wanting to verify their Social Security Number.

These calls are usually high pressure and can be very persuasive. They are targeting your money and are also typically targeting older taxpayers.

We are here to say that if the FBI is looking into your SSN (for whatever reason) they will not need you to verify it. They have all of that information privy to them. Also, the IRS will never call you, unless you have been in communication with the IRS in which you initiated contact. Otherwise, they send notices via the mail.

If you are ever worried if the phone call or voicemail you heard is a scam, contact the IRS for clarification.

This post is to serve as a friendly 'heads up' in case you or your loved ones have mentioned similar phone calls.

As the start of tax season looms in the near distance, we wanted to start a series of posts to update you on what to expect for this tax season.

The first update is the Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) and what information you should bring to your preparer (hopefully us).

For your 2020 return, you will need the dates and amounts of your EIPs. These amounts were classified as an advanced credit for your 2020 tax return. This means that you DO NOT owe taxes on these amounts NOR will they have an affect on what your refund/ amount owed will be.

If you were eligible for the EIPs and either didn't get one or both or didn't get the full amount, you may be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit. This will work much like a dependent care credit by either reducing your tax liability by the amount you were eligible for or increasing your return by the amount you were eligible for.

To the IRSs credit (and we don't say that often) their website is helpful in answering questions about these credits; the EIPs and the Recover Rebate Credit.

Stay tuned for more updates and never hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Eligible individuals can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. These forms can also be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible for the credit.
