⚑ Lightning Strike – Chimney Damage

Yesterday, the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department assisted one of our neighbors after their chimney was struck by lightning.

Thankfully, all residents were safe and well, with damage limited to the chimney. Our members responded to assess the situation, help ensure the home was safe, and provide assistance to the residents.

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to our mutual aid partners who responded alongside us. Your continued support and willingness to work together help ensure that our community receives the best possible response when it matters most.

πŸš’ Neighbors helping neighbors β€” that’s what the fire service is all about.

Please remember: If your home is struck by lightning, call 911 and have the structure checked for possible fire or hidden damage, even if there are no obvious signs of a fire.

πŸš²πŸ›΄ **E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Reminder β€” Know the NYS Law!** πŸ›΄πŸš²

As more people enjoy e-bikes and electric scooters during the warmer months, the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department wants to remind our community to **ride safely and know the rules.**

In New York State:

βœ… **Riders must be 16 years of age or older** to operate an e-bike or e-scooter.
βœ… **Helmets are required for riders ages 16 and 17.**
βœ… Riders must follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians.
βœ… E-scooters are limited to roads with a posted speed limit of **30 MPH or less.**
βœ… Riding on sidewalks is generally not permitted unless allowed by local rules. ([NY DMV][1])

πŸ”₯ **Safety Tips:**
β€’ Always wear a properly fitted helmet β€” every ride, every time.
β€’ Make sure your bike or scooter is the correct size and in good working order.
β€’ Use lights and reflective clothing, especially at night.
β€’ Ride in a predictable manner and watch for vehicles, pedestrians, and other hazards.
β€’ Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
β€’ Talk with younger riders about the risks β€” these are motorized vehicles, not toys. ([Times Union][2])

Parents and guardians: Before purchasing an e-bike or scooter, make sure you understand the laws, the capabilities of the device, and whether it is appropriate for your child.

A few minutes of safety preparation can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

**Ride smart. Ride safe. Look out for each other.**

Today we honor the life and legacy of Life Member Thomas "Tom" Parquette, who passed away on July 10, 2026.

Tom dedicated decades of his life to serving others as a firefighter, including many years with the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department. His years of service exemplified the true meaning of dedication to emergency services and our community.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Tom traveled to New York City to assist with the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Like so many members of the fire service, he selflessly put others before himself during one of our nation's darkest days.

Tom will be remembered not only for his commitment to the fire service, but also for his kindness, dedication, and the friendships he built over the years.
Please keep Tom's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Rest easy, Tom. We have the watch from here. β€οΈπŸ–€πŸš’

Thomas Parquette’s obituary said he β€œdedicated his life to helping others.”

πŸš’πŸš“πŸš‘ What an amazing day in the Town of Lysander!

The Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department was proud to spend the day alongside our outstanding community partners, including Plainville Fire Department, Seneca River Fire Department, Northwest Fire District, Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps (GBAC), Baldwinsville Police, Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, the Baldwinsville Central School District, the Town of Lysander Highway Department, Onondaga County Emergency Management, OCVFA and Gypsum Express.

Together, we showcased our emergency vehicles and equipment, handed out fire and life safety information, and talked with families about the many services our agencies provide. It was a great opportunity to answer questions, meet members of our community, and demonstrate how teamwork among local organizations helps keep the Town of Lysander safe.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit us! We appreciate your support and enjoyed spending the day with you. We also thank our partner agencies for helping make this event such a success.

Working together, we make our community stronger, safer, and better prepared. β€οΈπŸš’

As we celebrate our nation's 250th Anniversary with family, friends, cookouts, and outdoor festivities, the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department would like to remind everyone to make safety part of your celebration.
πŸ”₯ Grill Safely
After grilling, place hot coals and ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid and allow them to cool completely before disposing of them.
Never place hot ashes or embers into a plastic garbage container, as they can easily start a fire.
πŸ”₯ Fire Pits
Keep children and pets a safe distance away from fire pits.
Maintain a safe space around the fire to prevent burns and always supervise the fire until it is completely extinguished.
πŸŽ† Fireworks Safety
If you choose to use legal fireworks, please do so responsibly.
Use fireworks in a clear, open area away from homes, dry grass, trees, and other structures.
Keep spectators at a safe distance.
Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
Have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of an emergency.
From all of us at the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable holiday weekend as we celebrate 250 years of our great nation.
Happy Independence Day!

Residential Fire on Haylage Circle – June 28

On June 28, the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department, with mutual aid assistance from the Liverpool Fire Department, Moyers Corners Fire Department, Northwest Fire District, Seneca River Fire Department and GBAC, responded to and successfully extinguished a residential fire on Haylage Circle.

Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, the fire was brought under control and further damage was limited. Incidents like this highlight the importance of automatic mutual aid and the strong partnerships that exist between our neighboring fire departments.

The Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department would like to thank all of the firefighters, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and support staff who assisted during this incident. Working together ensures the highest level of service and protection for our communities.

As a reminder, make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms on every level and outside each sleeping area. Test them monthly and replace batteries as needed. If you need assistance checking or installing smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, the Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department offers a Smoke Detector Program. Visit BCSFD.org or call 315-635-5135 ext. 559 to schedule an appointment.

Together, we can help keep our community safe. πŸš’πŸ”₯
