Veterans are encouraged to file your official military discharge papers (DD-214) in the Saratoga County Clerk's Office at 40 McMaster St. You keep the original, but you and your immediate family members will be able access this sealed document at any time to get a free certified copy. You or your family members may need your DD-214 to access certain veterans benefits in the future.

After filing your DD-214, you can get a F.A.V.O.R. card that provides discounts at lots of area businesses.

The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution observing the 25th anniversary of 9/11, honoring the memory of those who lost their lives and calling on residents to observe this solemn occasion with remembrance, reflection, and gratitude to those who served. The Board also recognized four local residents with personal connections to the events of that day and provided them with a ceremonial copy of the resolution.

Joe Fodera, Halfmoon Town Justice, was an NYPD detective who was at the towers on 9/11 and was assigned to the site for months afterward.

Robert “Bobby” Williams, former Saratoga Springs Fire Chief, was a former member of the NY-TF 2 Urban Search and Rescue team and served as a rescue technician specialist deployed to New York City during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Tamim Fares, a U.S. Army sergeant and Saratoga County Veterans Service Officer, served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror following the 9/11 attacks.

Frank Tatum, a Stillwater resident, lost his mother, Diane Moore Parsons, who worked in the towers and was killed on 9/11. He represented 9/11 victims’ families for many years.

On August 18, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution honoring the lives impacted by 9/11. Hear from our own Veterans Service Officer, Tamim Fares, who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror following the attacks.

Today’s Honor Deceased Veterans ceremony honored U.S. Army Veteran Raymond G. McKnight of the Town of Greenfield.

Born August 9, 1925, in Porter Corners, NY, Ray graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1944 before entering the U.S. Army on March 13, 1944. Serving as a Combat Infantryman with F Company, 2nd Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, he deployed to the European Theatre on October 17, 1944, fought in and around Belgium and the German border, and took part in the Battle of the Bulge.

After crossing the Rhine River, Ray was wounded on March 26, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart. His service was also recognized with the WWII Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 21, 1945, as a Private First Class.

Raymond married Fay in 1973 and together they had 3 daughters. Ray worked for the International Paper Co. in Corinth for 11 years before joining the US Postal Service in 1955 as a rural letter carrier for Porter Corners and Greenfield for 32 years, Retiring in 1987. Ray was a member of the Porters Corners Methodist Church, where he worked with the youth there. HE was also a charter member of the Greenfield Fire Co. No. 2 and never missed a Tuesday Night bowling league. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid woodsman with the Baldwin Hunting Club of Stony Creek. Ray passed away on December 8, 1987.

This monthly ceremony, organized by our office and the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, honors a late veteran and welcomes family and the public to attend.
