Today's Honor Deceased Veterans Ceremony honored the life of Donald L. Hersey of the Town of Providence.
Born on November 28, 1945, in Corinth to Louis and Mabel, Donald attended Galway Schools. He joined the US Marine Corps on January 29, 1965, training as an Engineer Equipment Operator before serving as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam. Following his service in Vietnam, Donald was assigned to Company B of the 8th Engineer Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He received an honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant on January 28, 1968. His dedication earned him several accolades, including the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with 1 Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with Device, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Donald also served in the US Army Reserves.
In civilian life, he was self-employed, engaging in various activities such as bulldozing, landscaping, and running a rubbish route. He later worked at the former Lockheed Martin in West Milton until his retirement in 2002. A dedicated community member, Donald was involved with the Providence Volunteer Ambulance Corp, the Volunteer Fire Department, and the American Legion Post 1461. He married Beverly on October 7, 1967, and together they had three children. Donald passed away on December 20, 2025.
This ceremony, organized by our office and the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, honors a late veteran monthly, inviting family and the public to attend.
