On Tuesday, our office joined the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency the Saratoga County NY Government Board of Supervisors other county and state officials in honoring Donald L. Hersey of Providence during May’s Deceased Veteran of the Month Ceremony. Communications Director Betsy DeMars presented the family with a special citation from County Clerk Craig A. Hayner, who was unable to attend.
Donald was born on November 28, 1945, in Corinth to Louis and Mabel and attended Galway Schools.
Don entered the U.S. Marine Corps on January 29, 1965. He trained as an Engineer Equipment Operator and served as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam. After his Vietnam service, he was assigned to Company B 8th Engineer Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC.
Don was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant on January 28, 1968. For his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with 1 Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with Device, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Don was self-employed doing several endeavors, bulldozing, landscaping, and a rubbish route. Later, Don was employed by the former Lockheed Martin in West Milton until he retired in 2002. He was a member of the Providence Volunteer Ambulance Corp, and the Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of American Legion Post 1461.
Don married Beverly on October 7, 1967, and together they had three children. He passed away on December 20, 2025.
