Thanksgiving is one of the busiest cooking days of the year! And, also, the leading day for home cooking fires.

As you prep your holiday favorites, remember: stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop, especially at higher temperatures. If you need to step away, turn off the burner until you return.

A few seconds of prevention can make all the difference.πŸ‚πŸ¦ƒ

Tis the season with the heat turned back on, make sure your CO alarms are in good working order and that the batteries are new! No one wants the panic of hearing a low battery alarm at 2am, thinking there is a real problem.

When was the last time you tested your CO alarm?

A quick press each month ensures it’s working β€” and a single chirp every 30–60 seconds means it’s time for a new battery.

At approximately 10:30 AM today, the Ballston Spa Fire Department was activated on the box alarm with the Rock City Falls Fire Department for multiple reports of a plane crash near the Saratoga County Airport in Milton. At the same time, our department was also dispatched to an indoor gas odor within our primary district.

Crews from Eagle-Matt Lee Fire Co. #1 and Union Fire Company #2 promptly responded to both incidents. While en route to the reported plane crash, a second alarm was transmitted, bringing an additional request for an Engine from Ballston Spa along with other mutual aid resources.

The gas odor incident was quickly investigated and resolved without further issue, allowing our crews to respond to assist at the plane crash scene. Ballston Spa and Rock City Falls firefighters worked together to extinguish the fire and mitigate hazards. During this time, members remained in service to backfill our stations and handled one additional call within the district.

We extend our appreciation to the Malta Ridge Volunteer Fire Company and Round Lake, NY Fire Department for providing district coverage. Also on scene were Community Emergency Corps, Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police & Park Police, Saratoga County Office of Emergency Management, and other mutual aid partners on stand-by.

A special thank-you to the Sheriff’s Office Communications Division for their outstanding organization, coordination, and professionalism throughout the incident.

All questions or inquiries regarding this incident and the ongoing investigation should be directed to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, NTSB, or FAA.

This morning, over 50 firefighters from Ballston Spa Fire Department and surrounding agencies gathered at the Ballston Spa Central School auditorium for a powerful and informative seminar presented by Retired FDNY Lieutenant Tim Klett, who brings over 40 years of experience in the fire service.

Lt. Klett shared valuable insights on tactics and considerations for fighting fires in homes with hoarding conditions - a challenging and dangerous environment for both firefighters and occupants.

This training was inspired by a 2024 house fire in Ballston Spa involving hoarding conditions that tragically resulted in a civilian fatality. Events like these reinforce our ongoing commitment to training, education, and readiness - ensuring our members are always prepared to serve and protect our community safely and effectively.

We appreciate Lt. Klett for taking the time to share his expertise with our department and neighbors.
