The Baltic Volunteer Fire Department was created in 1911 and provides fire protection, ems, and rescue services for the community nestled on the bank of the Big Sioux River. What started with two hand-carts carrying chemicals and equipment has grown to a fleet of six motorized apparatus (a pumper, a water tender, a pumper/tender, a rescue, and 2 wildland units) carrying specialized equipment in an
effort to handle any emergency that may come our way. Baltic is located along side the Big Sioux River about 12 miles north of Sioux Falls. We operate one fire station located on the main highway through Baltic. Our first response area covers 68 square miles of central to northern Minnehaha County. At the present time, we have 26 volunteers that respond to 120 calls per year on average, with a majority of our calls being medically related in nature. We typically meet twice a month, once for training and once for a business meeting. We also provide public fire education and fire station tours to the kids in school as well as provide CPR training for community members. The fire service is a unique calling and we rely on community members who are willing to dedicate their time to be members of the Fire Department to respond to emergencies as they arise.
