Over the last 6 months, the Baltic Fire Engine Co. #1 has added 4 new members to the department. In today’s volunteer fire service climate, that matters more than most people realize.

Departments across Connecticut are being pushed harder than ever to maintain coverage with fewer members and very little outside support. Despite those challenges, our officers continue to work on systems that strengthens our response that provides the Town of Sprague with effective and reliable emergency services.

At the same time, we’ve continued investing heavily into training and development for our membership.

Recently:
• 2 probationary members completed an EMT course
• Another member is attending a Q-Endorsement course (apparatus driver endorsement)
• Additional department training has been conducted regularly

These members are already putting in the work required to serve our residents with the standard of service they deserve.

Join your fellow neighbors who have recently made the leap into helping their community.

In the worst moments of someone’s life, when fear and uncertainty take over, there’s always a calm voice on the other end of the line.

Before the sirens. Before the lights. Before we even get the call.

That voice belongs to a dispatcher.

This week, we recognize the professionals behind the scenes who make everything we do possible.

Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications (QVEC) dispatchers are there 24/7—guiding callers, coordinating responders, and making sure help gets where it’s needed.

From all of us at Baltic Fire Department—thank you for your dedication, your professionalism, and your unwavering support.

Happy National Telecommunicators Week.

Even on non-training days our members are still putting in the work!

Asst. Chief Ouimette and Lieutenant Genest guided 2 new probationary members through SCBA confidence training ahead of a scheduled live burn this weekend.

The goal of this training is to prepare our new members for the possible fatigue associated with interior firefighting while wearing an SCBA.

Tonight members took part in mutual aid training with Lisbon Fire Department focusing on forcible entry.

Our members gained valuable experience needed to stay on top of the many intricate skills involved in firefighting. 3 new probationary members also gained a wealth of knowledge during this training.

We would like to thank Taftville Fire Co. #2 for allowing us to practice the many different techniques of forcible entry with their door.

We're running out of people.

This isn’t a problem unique to one town or one firehouse; it's happening everywhere.

Across our communities, the number of people willing and able to volunteer is shrinking. At the same time, the calls aren't slowing down. If anything, they're increasing. More emergencies. More need. Fewer people are stepping forward to meet it.

Inside the firehouse, that reality is already here and is being felt in real ways.

The same names keep showing up. The same group of people is answering calls again and again. The list isn’t getting longer. The workload isn’t getting lighter. The workforce isn't getting younger. We’re relying on neighboring departments to fill the gaps, and they’re relying on us to help them more than ever.

This isn’t about the future anymore. This is happening right now.

I won’t sugarcoat it. Joining a volunteer fire department isn't easy, and it takes time. The initial training is demanding. It will interrupt your routine. There will be nights when it’s inconvenient, when it would be easier to stay home, when you question whether you can keep up.

That part is real. But it’s also temporary.

What’s on the other side of that effort is something most people will never experience. You learn how to stay calm when others can’t. You learn how to step into situations people naturally avoid and actually be useful. You gain real skills you use on calls, at home, and in everyday life. And you become part of a group that shows up for their neighbors when they need it most.

It’s rewarding. It’s satisfying. And it makes a difference in your life and in your community. It changes how you see yourself.

This isn’t about being a certain type of person. It’s not about being the strongest or the fastest. It’s not about having experience or knowing exactly what to do on day one. There are roles for all kinds of people: on the fireground, in EMS, and behind the scenes.

What matters is the willingness to step forward and learn. Men and women, young adults, parents, people with full-time jobs and other commitments—people who have thought about it before but never took the first step. You don’t need to be ready for the worst right now. You just need to be willing to start.

Because here's the truth: the calls will keep coming. They always do. It might be your house. It might be your neighbor. The only question is who will be there to answer them. Will it be you?

If this made you stop and think for a second, don't overthink it. Stop by your local firehouse. Message them. Talk to someone. Sit in on a drill. Ask questions. No pressure. No commitment. Just come see what it's really all about.

Because the hardest part isn't the training. It is walking through the door for the first time.

Baltic standby crew responded to 4 medical calls and was cancelled while responding to a structure fire in the Town of Scotland.

One of our medical incidents required lengthy patient extrication due to the amount of snow we received.
