GEDCO GEDCO, celebrating 30 years in 2021, is committed to a just society that respects the dignity and wo GEDCO is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021.

Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation (GEDCO) was founded by Reverend Jack Sharp and clergy from 7 churches of different denominations in Baltimore. Today, this group has grown to include over 55 Member Organizations. In partnership with faith communities, GEDCO provides affordable housing with supportive services and assists in meeting emergency needs of community residents. GEDCO manages a n

umber of properties to house adults with mental disabilities, nurture homeless women and men, enable seniors to age with dignity, and stabilize neighborhoods through homeownership. The organization offers educational, wellness, social, nutritional, and recreational opportunities for seniors at the Harford Senior Center and Senior Network of North Baltimore. Most of the 550+ residents have incomes less than 30% of the median income in the Baltimore metropolitan area, and all fall under 60% of this mark. GEDCO currently is the only non-profit developer of affordable, large-scale housing projects with supportive services in north Baltimore City. In addition to housing programs, GEDCO operates CARES (Civic and Religious Emergency Services), a food pantry and emergency financial assistance center located in the back of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. CARES responds to more than 5000 visits annually from community members seeking food, advocacy, and emergency financial assistance for utility bills, eviction prevention and prescriptions. The CARES Career Connection addresses barriers to employment and provides 1:1 volunteer mentoring that assists program participants in obtaining and maintaining jobs. In FY21 GEDCO:
• Responded to 5,320 requests for food
• Assisted 112 households with utility bills
• Helped 149 households with eviction prevention
• Supported 1,763 children through CARES services
• Assisted 92 people find jobs despite COVID-19
• Conducted 425 wellness checks on older adults during shelter-in-place restrictions

GEDCO is led by a board of directors and CEO Nichole Doye Battle who has 20+ years of professional real estate and management experience in promoting and addressing affordable housing needs in Ohio, Maryland and the District of Columbia. She has managed the development of more than 500 rental and homeownership units in urban communities, and has extensive experience in community and master planning as well as managing the land development process for urban residential communities.

GEDCO team members Nichole Battle and Quanesha Richardson recently had the opportunity to attend and celebrate the creation of the new Govans Community Farm at our member organization and founding member, Govans Presbyterian Church.

The event brought together community members, partners, and supporters to recognize this exciting new space dedicated to connection, wellness, and environmental stewardship. Like GEDCO, Govans Presbyterian Church is also a partner of Nature Sacred, helping to create welcoming green spaces that encourage reflection, healing, and community engagement.

The new Govans Community Farm joins a growing network of sacred spaces throughout Baltimore. GEDCO’s own Nature Sacred space, Thanksgiving Place at Stadium Place, continues to serve as a peaceful gathering space for residents, visitors, and neighbors alike.

We are grateful to all of our partners, volunteers, and community members who continue to help cultivate spaces that nourish both people and neighborhoods.

A Day of Generosity at CARES: Community Support in Action

While we were receiving a donation from the No Kings March, we were also surprised and deeply grateful to receive a large and generous donation from the Boy Scouts. Their support was an unexpected gift that made an already meaningful day even more impactful.

The first set of photos captures the Cub Scout Pack 133’s donation, while the boxed items shown were contributed through the No Kings March. We are also looking forward to receiving additional donations, and we remain incredibly thankful for the continued generosity of our community partners.

We would like to extend a special shoutout to Marsha for her extraordinary dedication. Marsha arrived at 8:30 AM and stayed until 6:00 PM, helping tirelessly throughout the day. Her commitment, energy, and willingness to serve do not go unnoticed and are deeply appreciated.

A heartfelt thank you to Rev. Jenn as well for stepping in to lend support. Your presence and assistance helped make the day run smoothly, and we are grateful for your care and partnership.

Moments like these reflect the strength of our community and the impact we can make when we come together in service of our neighbors.

GEDCO Board & Committee Members Enjoy an Evening Out

GEDCO Board & Committee Members, along with friends and staff, gathered for an informal gathering at Johnny’s of Roland Park this past Thursday evening. Everyone enjoyed delicious food and drink along with great conversation and fun stories. One staff member reflects, "I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Paulette Harris. She is currently Resident Council President for Weinberg Court. She is also a newly appointed member of the Stadium Place Board." Given that this is the 35th Anniversary Year for GEDCO, it is leadership’s hope to hold similar events throughout the coming year.

Thank You To our Volunteers!

GEDCO is truly grateful for you and all that you do. Not only do Volunteers provide expertise and manpower to maintain and further our programs and resources, they also spread awareness and opportunities to the surrounding community, and contribute greatly to creating a stronger, healthier Baltimore. Below are our many volunteers, none of which we could've made it to our 35th anniversary without.

Sincerely,
Nichole Battle, CEO

GEDCO Spring Appeal: Supporting Harford House

This spring, GEDCO is reaching out for support following a recent fire at Harford House. While there were no serious injuries, the incident and resulting water damage from firefighting efforts have displaced all residents as repairs are underway.

GEDCO is now working to secure new permanent housing for affected residents and help them make a fresh start. This includes assistance with furniture, essential household goods, and personal items needed to re-establish stable homes. These unexpected needs come with significant costs, and we are asking for your help.

Your gift to our Spring Appeal will directly support Harford House residents as they transition into permanent housing and rebuild their lives.

Thank you for standing with GEDCO and our community.
