Clinton Street Community Center Investing in Highlandtown by supporting refugee families & offering high-quality preschool education.

The Clinton Street Community Center is meeting the needs of our community through the expansion of The Highlandtown Preschool to offer educational opportunities for two-year-old children. The CSCC is also renovating space to offer housing for newly arrived refugees in our neighborhood. The dream is to create a safe space for our youngest neighbors and newly arrived families that responds to the needs and dreams of the community of Highlandtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

New Refugee Family Support!

Thanks to everyone who has already agreed to help with painting on Wednesday (7:30pm) and Thursday (8pm)! Really grateful to have your help. If you haven't let us know yet, please send over a note soon.

In reviewing the home, here are things that we need before Friday--dropping them off Thursday evening would be IDEAL, but you can also text/e-mail us to make arrangements. If you intend to provide something, please write your name on the list to mark it off:

This is an all-hands-on-deck call for assistance tomorrow, May 10th.

For the church projects, meet at church at 9:30am to get oriented.

For the CSCC refugee project, meet at 137 S. Clinton at 10am to get oriented.

The biggest project is painting (just one coat, just the walls) the refugee resettlement house at 137 S. Clinton Street. The Mendez-Garcia family moved out in March, and we hope to welcome a new family soon (the father is going to visit tomorrow while we are painting to check things out). So we want to have things ready to go for them.

Meanwhile, on the church side, we have lots of projects to handle--including more painting, if that's your thing, a simple fix to the prayer wall, and some tile work in the kitchen.

Please let us know if you plan to join us! Thanks!

So honored to welcome Global Refuge and their Welcome Center to Fells Point (and the 1st District). As GR CEO Krishanti Vignarajah shared this morning, "Baltimore needs immigrants and refugees, and immigrants and refugees need Baltimore." We certainly know that very well in Southeast Baltimore, where neighbors of diverse cultures and languages have building and transforming community together for more than 150 years.

Please help the CSCC reunify a local family!

A Venezuelan mother who fled to the United States with three of her children, seeking asylum, needs our help to bring her final child here to the United States. The child, a nine year old boy, was left in the care of his grandmother. With his grandmother’s recent death, the child is without a suitable person to serve as caregiver. These funds will help ensure his ability to travel with family friends as they journey to the United States, allowing for reunification with his siblings and his mother here in Baltimore.

The Clinton Street Community Center has committed $1500 toward this effort, AND we have committed to helping raise the additional funds from our supporters and neighbors.

Will you please prayerfully, and generously, commit to this effort? We are so grateful for your support for our immigrant and refugee neighbors, particularly in difficult circumstances like these.

You can make your donations at https://www.clintonstreetcommunity.org/donate or mail them to 141 S. Clinton Street, Baltimore, MD 21224.

Urgent request for support for a family seeking refuge in the U.S.:

A family of five with three young children will soon be arriving in the Baltimore area. They are coming to the U.S. due to imminent danger to the family in Mexico. Centro de los Derechos del Migrante (CDM) is representing one of the adults in a workers’ rights complaint, as he was a victim of labor abuses and potential human trafficking as a migrant laborer in the U.S. Due to the status with which the family will arrive, they are not eligible for many services available to other immigrants and refugees until they have a more permanent status.

All donated funds will go directly to the family to meet their basic needs, like housing, food, clothing, and household supplies until they are eligible for other support services.

You may make a donation at:

Clothing donations needed for the Mendez Garcia family with the Clinton Street Community Center!

What an exciting week for the life and ministry of our congregation! On Thursday evening, the Mendez Garcia family from Guatemala (a brother, sister, and another brother--that brother's wife, and their two children) moved into the new Clinton Street Community Center house here on our block!!!!! We will have the chance to get to know them better over the coming weeks and months as they settle in alongside us here in Highlandtown. They are so grateful to be here, and glad to know that there is an entire church and neighborhood community which has been praying for them and preparing for them so generously.

Please comment below if you would like the list of clothing needs & sizes. Thanks!

Feel free to bring them to the church building on Sundays, or to the church office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays during the day. Or just be in touch with Pastor Mark about alternate arrangements.

Let us take a moment to simply say THANK YOU! Sitting there on Thursday and getting to welcome the family into their new home gave us the chance to reflect and remember all of the members of our community who worked so hard and gave so much of their time and energy and resources to make this day possible. You gave generously. You demoed an entire house. You installed flooring. You painted. You painted. You painted some more. You laid down vinyl base. You donated and installed furniture. You put together furniture with no instructions! You stocked the refrigerator. You cooked the first meal for them in their new home. And you prayed and prayed for this family over the past two years. And now--our new neighbors are here. And they are surrounded by a community which has already been loving them and wants nothing more than to see them be at peace, happy, and successful here in this community we share. So, again... thank you.

Special thanks are due to the leadership of our congregation, including council presidents Mary Miller and Brynn Farlow, and of the Clinton Street Community Center (Erin Deason, Aubrey Tardy, Deanna Bracken, Pat Selwood, Sarah Kretschmann). We will have more opportunities to say thank you and to celebrate at a later date.
