Library leaders from across the state gathered in Annapolis this morning as Governor Wes Moore signed several important library bills into law. The bills provide critical funding for Maryland’s 24 public library systems, three Regional Resource Centers, the Maryland State Library Resource Center and the Governor’s Young Readers Program. In addition, county library boards now have the ability to add a student member.

Many thanks to Governor Moore and the General Assembly for their continued support of Maryland libraries. A special thanks also goes out to our partners and the many community members who worked hard on behalf of public libraries throughout the session.

A major milestone for rural Wicomico County 📚

The new Lewis R. Riley Library in Parsonsburg stands as a testament to strong local leadership, collaboration, and community investment. Named for former Senator and Secretary of Agriculture Lewis R. Riley — who spent his life in the area — the library overlooks the Riley family farm and represents a lasting legacy for the community.

After operating out of a trailer in Pittsville for nearly 20 years, this permanent location became possible through the dedication of Wicomico County Public Library leadership, county partners, and support from the Friends Foundation of the Wicomico Public Library.

For this week’s , Maryland State Librarian Morgan Lehr Miller is reading The Fountain by Casey Scieszka. 📖

“A life only matters because it ends.”

The Fountain by Casey Scieszka is one of those rare books that feels magical, suspenseful, and uniquely human all at once. Set in the Catskills and centered around an immortal woman searching for answers about her family’s mysterious condition, the story asks powerful questions about what gives life meaning and whether living forever is really a gift.

Did you know the history of Maryland libraries dates back to the 17th century? The first libraries in Maryland were organized in 1695 by Thomas Bray as parochial libraries, laymen's libraries intended as lending libraries for the public at large, and non-circulating libraries.

Fast-forward nearly 200 years to 1886, when businessman and philanthropist Enoch Pratt established Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore (pictured in 1938). Enoch Pratt Free Library has since grown to more than 20 branches across the city.

In 1902, the State Library Commission was authorized to develop public libraries throughout Maryland. The state now has more than 190 public libraries in all 23 counties and Baltimore City. And in 1905, the first mobile library in the nation began operating as a horse-drawn wagon in Washington County.
