Do women have struggles when it comes to reporting? Absolutely, but no where near the stigma that male victims face.

Men and women should be treated with the same support and understanding when they come forward. There should absolutely NOT be a double standard.

For 20 years, I lived with the repercussions of the s*xual assaults I endured in the Navy as a 17-year-old. My first year in the Navy, I was repeatedly beaten and r**ed by a group of my fellow sailors. I reported the assaults over and over, and each time the authorities who should have protected me, dismissed me and treated me like a liar. They never stopped the assaults.

The abuse haunted me for 20 years, hurting every aspect of my life—my family, my career, and my sobriety.

In 2009 it became too much to bear, and I attempted su***de. That was my wake-up call—in therapy I realized that I couldn’t stay silent about what happened to me, and I couldn’t sit by as it happened to other survivors.

Today, I share my story to show survivors they aren’t alone – that they deserve healing and justice. I’m asking for your help. Together, with End Violence Against Women International, we can ensure no more survivors have to endure what I did when they reach out for help.

When survivors know we are here for them, they won’t suffer alone. When they know we have their backs, they won’t have to wait 20 years to find help—they can begin healing immediately.

Finding my voice saved my life.

By supporting EVAWI, you can help other survivors find theirs.
