What a great night at the West Side Menโs Shelter.
This place has meant a lot to me for many years. Iโve been honored to support it as a major donor to the Lazarus Caucus auction, to install two vegetable gardens (at both the old and new locations), to hire and support several gentlemen over the years, and to donate good food, including plenty of crab cakes and leftovers made with care.
But more than anything, Iโve tried to show up. To sit, listen, share a meal, and build fellowship. Because so many people experiencing homelessness have a story, and whatโs needed just as much as shelter is compassion, respect, and human connection.
After serving tonight, I spent time on the floor encouraging folks to keep their spirits up and ended up in a 20-minute conversation with a man who told me how much it meant to simply be treated as an equal. That moment stays with you.
As we look ahead, Iโm also deeply concerned about the future of this shelter in light of UMBCโs plans for Spring Grove. This community matters. The men here deserve stability, dignity, and to be seen.
Grateful for the chance to serve and stand in solidarity. ๐ค
