What happens when students are removed from the classroom?

New Casey-funded research found that, among Massachusetts high school students facing the highest risk of court involvement, a single out-of-school suspension increased the likelihood of entering the juvenile justice system from 31% to 49%. Repeated suspensions increased that risk even more.

New research shows out-of-school suspension can have lasting consequences for students, especially in ninth grade. See the data.

Meaningful youth engagement is about more than giving young people a seat at the table. It's about listening to their experiences and using their ideas to improve programs, policies and services.

In a recent Community In-Site podcast episode, youth advocate Blanca Goetz and youth engagement consultant Kathleen Holt-Whyte discuss how organizations can build stronger partnerships with young people who have experienced foster care.

This podcast episode spotlights a free training series about utilizing youth engagement in child welfare. Learn more about the episode.

“When we look at students who miss many days of school, it’s the less common reasons that contribute the most — such as suspensions, taking care of family members, transportation barriers, mental health struggles and 'just didn’t want to go.' In some cases, these causes produce two to three times as many missed days per student as routine illnesses.”

Investments in counseling, support and creating more engaging school environments will all help attendance

More than 15,000 young people age out of foster care each year without a permanent family connection. Young people who age out of care are far more likely to experience homelessness, unemployment and barriers to education. But experts say extending foster care support beyond age 18 can improve outcomes, including higher earnings, better educational attainment and greater housing stability.

Youth aging out of foster care face challenges with housing, education, employment and more. Learn how these hurdles affect their futures.

“They lose so many choices as soon as they enter the system, and this is an opportunity for them to get some choices back and share their thoughts in a way that’s not judged.”

Georgia teens are turning their experience in foster care into paintings, poems and sculpture through the See Me project, a traveling art exhibition hosted by Casey grantee Georgia Appleseed Center for Law & Justice.

The See Me project has helped dozens of Georgia foster teens in group homes turn their lived experience into paintings, poems and sculpture.
