Maryland Supporters: BRING SB 869 UP FOR A VOTE IN JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS!

Maryland General Assembly Senate Bill 869, the vacatur expansion bill, is up for vote in the Proceedings Committee! SB 869 would expand the number of trafficking-related crimes eligible for vacatur, if those crimes were committed at the time the person was being trafficked. The bill also clarifies several procedural elements, including the standard of proof, and includes protections for crimes with identified victims and petitions brought in bad faith.

Please CALL every single member of the Senate Judicial Proceedings committee TODAY and demand a vote on Senate Bill 869!

Below, you will find a sample statement as well as a abbreviated list of your Maryland district representatives. Please take a few moments to call your elected Representative today!

“Hello, my name is ___ (and I am a member of your constituency, if that is true). I am calling to request that Senate Bill 869 be brought up for a vote in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. SB 869 would expand the ability of survivors of human trafficking who have been criminalized for acts they were forced to commit by their traffickers to petition the court to vacate, or, set aside those convictions. SB 869 has the support the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Association, the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force, the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women, and numerous victim services organizations throughout the state. Victims of human trafficking are being criminalized in Maryland, and SB 869 will strengthen Maryland’s response to this injustice. Thank you in advance for your assistance in getting this bill up for a vote!”
