☀️ Maryland Heat Awareness Week – Day 5: Looking Forward ☀️

Extreme heat days are expected to increase across Maryland in the coming years. In Baltimore, average temperatures could rise by nearly 4°F by the end of the 2030s. Preparing now can help keep communities safer, cooler, and more resilient.

Maryland has already taken important steps to protect residents from extreme heat, including:
🌳 Expanding tree planting efforts
🏠 Supporting energy efficiency and weatherization programs
❄️ Requiring air conditioning in certain new residential buildings
⚡ Providing energy bill assistance and limiting utility shutoffs during extreme heat

But more action is needed to ensure all Marylanders can stay safe and cool.

☀️ Maryland Heat Awareness Week – Day 4: Stay Safe in the Sun ☀️

Whether you’re spending time at the beach, in the park, or on the Chesapeake Bay, protecting yourself from the sun is essential during the summer months.

🌡️ Why it matters:
• Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.
• 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime
• About 90% of skin cancers are preventable

🧴 Sun safety tips:
• Check NOAA’s UV Index forecast before heading outside
• Wear SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours
• Seek shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM
• Wear sunglasses, hats, and lightweight protective clothing
• Stay hydrated and know the signs of heat-related illness

It’s never too late to practice sun safety. Stay cool, stay protected, and enjoy Maryland’s outdoors responsibly!

☀️ Maryland Heat Awareness Week – Day 3: Protecting Vulnerable Populations and Outdoor Workers ☀️

Extreme heat affects everyone differently. Children, older adults, pregnant people, unhoused individuals, outdoor workers, athletes, and people with certain medical conditions are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.

🌡️ Heat safety reminders:
• Check on older adults, neighbors, and unhoused community members
• Keep children cool, hydrated, and protected from worsening asthma symptoms
• Pregnant people should rest often, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged heat exposure
• Outdoor workers should know their rights and protections under Maryland’s heat stress standard

Maryland has one of the strongest workplace heat protection standards in the country, helping protect workers exposed to dangerous temperatures on the job.

Extreme heat can become dangerous quickly, especially for children, older adults, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and unhoused communities. Heat-related illness is preventable, and preparing early can help keep you and your loved ones safe this summer.

🌡️ Heat safety tips:
• Check your heat risk using the CDC HeatRisk tool
• Stay hydrated and spend time in air-conditioned spaces
• Know where your nearest cooling center is located
• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and use SPF 30+ sunscreen
• Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
• Check on neighbors and loved ones who may be more vulnerable to heat
