Churchill is responsible for almost $1 billion in annual contract administration, 6.3 million square-feet of State-owned facilities, and 4.6 million square-feet of leased space. DGS supports State and local government agencies by providing a full spectrum of design and construction, facilities operations, security, procurement, real estate and surplus property services. hill chairs the Government House Trust. He is also a member of the Procurement reform Commission. In addition, he a member of the Procurement Advisory Council and the Interagency Committee for Public School Construction.

DGS recognizes Clarissa Harlowe Barton for Women’s History Month. Barton was a self-taught American nurse who risked her life bringing supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War. At age 59, she founded the American Red Cross and continued to lead it for the next 23 years. Barton is also known for humanitarian work and civil rights advocacy. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1973.

DGS’s Office of Real Estate selected the John’s Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore as this month's charity. The team came together to assemble and donate care bags for patients undergoing treatment. Many thanks to Kelly Simms and Christy Johannasen for coordinating this event in memory of family members who have battled cancer.

DGS recognizes Barbara Ann Mikulski for Women’s History Month. Born and raised in Baltimore, Mikulski was elected to the Baltimore City Council in 1971, U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 and the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Maryland in 1986. Mikulski became the second woman in the nation’s history to serve in both chambers. Senator Mikulski helped establish the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health.
During Asset Management Awareness Month, DGS would like to recognize our Inventory Standards Office for their tireless efforts in managing the assets of the state of Maryland. This includes the oversight, accountability, transfer, and disposal of statewide assets including personal property, supplies, and equipment.

DGS recognizes Kathleen Kennedy Townsend for Women’s History Month. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was the sixth Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. She was the first female lieutenant governor of Maryland. Since 2021, she has served in the United States Department of Labor as an advisor on retirement. She is a member of the prominent political Kennedy family.

The Senior Procurement Advisory Group (SPAG) holds monthly meetings with all procurement officers statewide to review and discuss current procurement topics, guidelines, and updates. This month, National Purchasing Month, special guest Governor Wes Moore addressed the group, thanking them for all of their dedication and hard work.

Secretary Chaudhry and the DGS Real Estate team provided a tour of the new Maryland Department of Planning's Office location at 120 East Baltimore St. to Secretary Rebecca L. Flora and her team. The new location will provide 19,329 sf of office space for Planning's operations.
This is National Fix a Leak Week. James Boyd, Regional Manager of DGS’ Office of Facilities Management can be seen fixing a leak on the recirculating line to the water heater in the Penthouse of the 201 W. Preston St. Building.

DGS recognizes Maryland Secretary of State Susan C. Lee for Women’s History Month. Secretary Lee is the first Asian American elected to the Senate, General Assembly and to serve as Secretary of State in Maryland. While in the Maryland General Assembly, Lee was a leader on cyber security and innovation, identity theft, pay equity, laws to fight domestic violence, sexual assault, human and labor trafficking, and hate crimes.

DGS recognizes Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller for Women’s History Month. Lt. Governor Miller is the first South Asian woman elected Lt. Governor in the United States, as well as the first Asian American and only second female Lt. Governor to hold statewide office in Maryland.

Yesterday evening Secretary Atif Chaudhry was sworn in as the 12th Secretary of the Maryland Department of General Services. Governor Moore delivered the oath of office in an historic swearing-in ceremony, marking the most diverse cabinet in the state’s history.
Earlier this morning Secretary Chaudhry welcomed the Leadership Baltimore County Class of 2023 to Annapolis, MD where he provided some history and background on our historic capital and Annapolis complex. The class learned about the structure and functions of the Maryland State government and its role in our lives. DGS' own Emily Soontornsaratool was accepted into the Class of 2023 Leadership Baltimore County program.
March is National Women’s History Month. DGS encourages everyone to honor the women who came before us and fought for equality among all races and genders. The world is full of influential women today. Generations of women came before them, paving the way. Let’s keep carrying their torch onward.
This evening DGS participated in the Annual MBE Night in Annapolis hosted by the Legislative Black Caucus. DGS hosted a table at the event and spoke to attendees about eMMA, contracting opportunities, and upcoming networking and training events. This year's event focused on how public and private sector leaders can play a larger role in building an ecosystem that fosters growth for black-owned businesses.
DGS celebrates and honors the life of John Henry Murphy Sr. Murphy was born in Baltimore on December 25, 1840. He is best known as the founder of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. This is one of the oldest operating black family-owned newspapers in the U.S. Murphy helped build the African-American community in Baltimore by sharing its news and pressing for civil rights.
The Office of Real Estate's February Charity was Heart's Place Services, Inc. The ORE team supported homeless families in Baltimore City by participating in the Weekend Survival Kit Program and creating 3 survival kits to feed a total of 9 individuals. DGS celebrates and honors the life of Henry Blair. Blair was born in Glen Ross, MD in 1807. He was an inventor and one of the first African-Americans to receive a patent in the United States. In 1834, Blair received his first patent for a corn planter, a wheel-driven device that allowed farmers to plant more corn using less labor in a shorter period of time. Newspaper accounts at the time claimed that the device would combine the labor of eight people into one device.
Last week, DGS’ Federal Surplus division partnered with The Buddy Project to donate 50 Laptops to the African Institute of Arts, Science and Technology. The African Institute of Arts, Science and Technology, Inc., a non-profit located in Lanham, MD, will use the laptops to facilitate participation in its educational and workforce development programs in the local community and for administrative staff work by the organization.

General Services procured a new lease for the relocation of the Maryland Department of Human Services' Cambridge Office! In addition to rental savings, the new office is centrally located for convenient access by the agency’s clients. The landlord has also incorporated energy efficiency measures, and the space has been designed to accommodate the use of telework. Check out the new space:

Secretary Churchill and Clarence Felder, General Services' Chief of Public Schools & Community Colleges, visited the Modlogiq facility in New Holland, PA along with GIlbert Architects, Whiting Turner, and Prince George's County Public Schools to view the construction of the Cherokee Lane Elementary School. The school is a modular, multi-story, 68,000-square-foot K-12 school, and will be the first project delivery method is the first of its kind for Maryland Public Schools. The intention is to find a better means for construction, especially in areas where there are geographic and community challenges. Learn more about the innovative project:
Check out our Maryland Capitol Police officers who did the Special Olympics Maryland torch run! The group, joined by Secretary Churchill, ran from the State House to the Navy Stadium and back, totaling over two miles. The torch run is just one of the several events MCP participates in to support Special Olympics, like the Polar Bear Plunge and Cover the Cruiser. We are incredibly proud of our colleagues who continuously support such an amazing organization--thank you!

Churchill, Jr. announced the approval of a $68.5 million grant for the renovation of Marlboro Hall. “Future students and community members for generations will benefit from the renovations because the new Marlboro Hall will support student instructional space as well as space for public engagement.
