It is always bittersweet saying goodbye! Today marks the final day for our incredible summer youth workers, who joined us through the Baltimore City Mayor's Office of Employment Development YouthWorks program.

To cap off their time with us, Deputy Secretary Jason Perkins-Cohen joined the group to hear their final presentations. These talented young leaders tackled some of the biggest workforce issues facing our state today—including AI, cybersecurity, skill gaps, apprenticeships, and paid medical leave—sharing perspectives and creative solutions.

Maryland is investing $5 million to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities across the state!

Through the new Industry Apprenticeship Accelerator, nine regional organizations are partnering with nearly 150 local employers to launch and expand apprenticeship programs in high-demand fields like healthcare, IT, and early childhood education.

This initiative will create hands-on, earn-and-learn pathways for more than 650 Marylanders, allowing workers to build their careers while gaining nationally recognized credentials.

Many great careers – from healthcare to the trades – are possible with an industry-recognized credential.

Maryland’s Workforce Pell Grant program will soon provide financial aid to students in qualified high-quality short-term training programs. Every participating program must demonstrate high performance, preparing Marylanders for jobs in high-skill, high-wage, in-demand fields.

Institutions interested in offering Workforce Pell to students must submit programs to the Maryland Governor’s Workforce Development Board for review. Learn more at www.gwdb.maryland.gov/workforcepell

Applications for program eligibility that are completed by August 3 will receive state decisions in August and be eligible for federal review!

Huge shoutout to Carroll County Workforce Development for their incredible work supporting the next generation!

Today, Deputy Secretary Jason Perkins-Cohen visited their Summer Youth program to see these young workers in action. Participants spent the morning mastering their elevator pitches and professional greetings, followed by an insightful panel discussion with local business leaders and professionals.

By combining meaningful, hands-on work experience with weekly skills training, Carroll County is helping these young workers build confidence, forge professional relationships, and set the foundation for long-term career success.

Art, youth, and community building! 🎨✨

Deputy Sec. Angela Cabellon and Baltimore City Mayor's Office of Employment Development Director Mackenzie Garvin visited Wide Angle Youth Media today to see the incredible YouthWorks Baltimore program in action.

Instead of just a standard tour, visitors and youth workers rolled up their sleeves with a staff art instructor to create collages about how they are connected to their city.

Programs like YouthWorks are essential bridges between education and meaningful careers. By partnering across state and city levels—and teaming up with incredible local organizations like Wide Angle Youth Media—we can ensure Maryland's next generation has the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
