It's Dam Safety Day!

Dr. Visty Dalal with MDE’s Dam Safety Program takes his job serving the people of Maryland very seriously. 💪🏽
Keeping Maryland’s dams safe isn’t just about infrastructure — it’s about protecting lives, property, and entire communities. 🏞️🏠
The Maryland Dam Safety Program plays a crucial role in ensuring every dam in the state is designed, constructed, operated, and maintained to the highest safety standards to prevent failures and disasters.
✅ Regular safety inspections based on “hazard classification”
✅ Evaluation of downstream risks
✅ Permits for construction & repair
✅ Oversight during dam construction
✅ Emergency Action Plan development & drills with local officials
Dr. Dalal and the MDE team are dedicated to safeguarding Marylanders through thorough inspections, smart planning, and strong collaboration with emergency management partners.

Following the Potomac Interceptor incident, we have been closely monitoring water quality, and the latest data from our Little Falls sampling station near the site.

While fluctuations in water quality can be influenced by various factors like recent heavy rainfall (which caused a temporary spike shown), the overall trend indicates that mitigation efforts are working and the river is recovering. Lower bacteria levels mean safer water for the Potomac's wildlife and the people who enjoy this beautiful river.

Are you planning a weekend beach outing this weekend to make up for the missed opportunity last weekend? If so, be sure to check the Healthy Beaches website before you take a dip. You can check on the water quality of over 150 "beaches" across the state. We've had lots of rain the past several days and the general rule of thumb is to avoid natural bodies of water for 48-72 hours after significant rainfall. Why take the risk?
