Welcome to the official page for the Maryland Department of Health. We promote the health and safety of all Marylanders through disease prevention, access to care and customer service.
The Department has four major administrations: Public Health, Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Health Care Financing (Medicaid). In support of our mission, we regulate health care providers, facilities and organizations; in addition to managing direct services to patients where appropriate.
Maryland’s health care delivery system includes public and private hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, home health care services, hospices, providers, health educators and more. The system also includes 24 local health departments — one in each of Maryland’s 23 counties and in Baltimore City — as well as 20 boards that license and regulate health care professionals and seven commissions that issue grants, conduct research and make recommendations on issues that affect Maryland’s health care delivery system.
