If you want help meeting a big new fitness goal, Manikanta Sirumalla may have the app for you. Manikanta came to UMBC from India as a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in data science. Since arriving, he’s tapped into the wealth of support for aspiring Retriever entrepreneurs. Several UMBC-affiliated programs and people helped Manikanta as he developed and launched his AI-powered fitness and nutrition app, RepTrack Pro. Read more: https://bit.ly/4yR3KIN

Herana Kamal Seneviratne, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has received a two-year grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to explore how two key HIV prevention drugs work inside the body. Alfred Boakye first began thinking deeply about the care and well-being of elders and their families while caring for his centenarian grandmother, Margaret Nyarko, in his home city of Tema, on the Atlantic coast of South East Ghana. She was in charge of her essential self-care routine—bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring from sitting to standing, and continence—and more complex daily tasks necessary for independent living: medication management, meal preparation, transportation, and shopping. “My story has a lot of twists and turns. I came to Baltimore in 2018 for treatment for opioid use disorder after experiencing homelessness, incarceration, hospitalizations, and treatment programs. Recovery was a process of 26 years,” says Garner, who now works in the Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Overdose Response. “When I came to Baltimore, I had a clean slate. I was able to go through an expungement process of criminal records, which was a list of misdemeanors that happened during my drug and alcohol addiction. Darters are small freshwater fish common in streams. They primarily eat macroinvertebrates—little bugs—and reproduce in spring. My research evaluates how introduced darter species might affect native darter species in Maryland. We study two native species and two that were introduced in the late 1950s and 1970s, likely unintentionally by anglers using them for bait. Read more: https://bit.ly/4hAvlru
