Henry surely is pleased. A delightful addition at the Mencken House and beautiful garden. It was left for Henry himself! What a suprise and a fitting tribute. Thank you Maureen! Spring has sprung. Imagine Henry Mencken relaxing in his back yard admiring the lovely colors, beautiful Moravian tiles, the fountain, his sun dial, the grapes 🍇 bursting through the trellis, the gazebo, and a comfy patio chair upon which to sit, take in the outdoors, and perhaps enjoy a cigar. OR we could remember Henry and his two brothers and perhaps sister running and playing in the yard with the most hyper doggie ever, Tessie! OR the Mencken days when Mencken kept a pet 🐢 turtle in the yard named Mary Baker Eddy! OR the minor explosions in the back yard while brewing homemade 🍺 concoctions! OR Mencken’s final days the years after he lost his ability to read or write, when he’d spend time in the garden being read to by William Manchester. 😢

This past Saturday’s musical gathering at the Mencken House was a resounding success, thanks to the remarkable efforts of our organizers and the passionate participation from everyone involved. From the start, the vibrant energy in the venue was contagious. Guests mingled in the foyer, exchanging stories and excitedly anticipating the performances. Many were able to enjoy the garden prior to the start of the event. Food, wine, and beer was plentiful and enjoyed by all.

Special thanks go to the entire organizing team, whose creativity and dedication brought this vision to life. Their attention to detail, from selecting the lineup to arranging refreshments ensured a seamless experience for all.

As the performances unfolded, there were several truly emotional moments. Whether it was the heartfelt baritone vocal performance of Jason Widney that moved the audience to tears or an uplifting classical piece on Henry’s piano by Carter McMullen. The musicians poured their souls into every note. These shared experiences deepened connections and created memories that will linger.

Attendance was strong, with nearly every seat filled and a few standing-room guests. The crowd’s enthusiasm and warmth transformed Mencken House into a welcoming hub of community spirit and musical celebration.

To everyone who joined us, whether performing, behind the scenes, volunteers, Board members, or in the audience, thank you for making Saturday at Mencken House unforgettable!

We are sad that you couldn't make it to this beautiful event but hopefully you'll be able to attend future H.L. Mencken's Saturday Night Club concerts!

Jason Widney, baritone, singing a selection of Robert Schumann’s masterpieces! Such a beautiful musical evening of music classics by Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann! This has to be one of the best Saturday Night Club concerts so far! The sold out audience was spellbound by the talent presented tonight!
