As gardeners, we are always grateful when we see milk snakes at Cylburn Arboretum. This one is a juvenile. They help keep garden pests under control!

Our Jan Van Leeuwen peonies are currently blooming in the Mansion Circle Garden at Cylburn Arboretum. We love the large single blooms that brighten the space. Like most peonies, they are herbaceous perennials that die back to the ground each winter. Botanists have also developed a woody form known as tree peonies. These shrubs lose their leaves each year but retain their woody stems, much like rose bushes. In the coming year, we will be reinstalling Cylburn’s tree peony collection!

They’re back! We had our first spotted lanternfly sighting this year.

This is a first instar nymph checking out some swamp milkweed in front of the Nature Education Center at Cylburn Arboretum. You may notice the black-and-white spotted nymphs getting bigger and bigger as they go through three more instars throughout the summer, watch for the adults in late summer.

Do you know how amazing the tulip poplar is? Sometimes referred to as a tulip tree, these trees are the tallest species of deciduous trees native to North America, often growing above all the other trees in the canopy. Tulip poplars are abundant in forests all over Maryland, and especially in our woodland. So if you’re ever looking at the canopy line and see one tree that appears to be taller than all the others, there is a good chance you're looking at a tulip poplar. These trees have a beautiful and unique leaf shape, and stunning flowers in the spring. And that's not all! The Baltimore Oriole is known to favor roosting in tulip poplar trees, and are drawn to the beautiful orange that appears on its flowers. The next time you’re on the trails, try and identify some tulip poplars. Since these trees are very tall, it is often easiest to find tulip poplars by identifying leaves or flowers on the ground.

Wild Ginger! Asarum canadense is a native, shade loving perennial. You’ve probably seen this plant from above and not thought much about it, which is a shame cause you should stop and smell every flower…. Even the small, hidden ones that replicate the smell of dead meat! Asarum canadense largely relies on self pollination, but it also creates small, low to the ground “carrion flowers” that hide under its leaves and replicates the smell and look of rotten means to attract gnats and beetles for pollination! While it can be dangerous to consume too much wild ginger it can be steeped in teas, without extracting all the negative toxins. I love learning all I can about strange and different kinds of native flowers and as a self proclaimed “wild” ginger myself, Asarum canadense is one of my favorites.
