A storm is a coming. Hurricane Florence is predicted to make landfall later this week, which means heavy rains and blustery winds can impact Baltimore. And while many people know how to get their homes ready, many do not know how to get their storm drains ready

Storm drains were created to prevent trash and debris from entering our drainage system and flowing into natural bodies of water. An influx of water from heavy rain can cause major problems to our city's infrastructure. With no where to go, when storm drains reach capacity, water and sewage can flood or streets and homes (YIKES!!)

Luckily, there are simple things you can do to BMORE Beautiful and help prevent/minimize flooding:

1. Clean out your storm drains on your block. Pick up and remove and trash and litter that is in your storm drains or in the street.
2. Never sweep trash into the streets or storm drains.
3. Call 311 if you know your storm drain in clogged.

Streams & Nightmares

Rain, rain it just doesn't seem to go away. Water that falls from the sky, and washes off to your property and trickles down the storm drain is likely to flow into our waterways opposed to water treatment plant. Storm drains can become clogged with everything. From leaves to trash, a clogged storm drain can lead to flooded streets, yards, and basements. Yikes! You can do a lot to keep our waterways clear by following some simple steps.

1.Just put a lid on it. Keep a tight lid on your trash can and recycle bins. You can use a zip time to connect your recycling lid to the bin).

2. Feed the Can, Man. Actually picking up trash in your neighborhood and placing it in a tied trash bag and then placing the bag in your trash can is essential. Don't sweep the trash into the streets.

3. Call 311. If you notice a clogged storm drain, call 311. Download the app, to make reporting easier.

4. Scoop the P**p. Stormwater will pick up animal waste and wash into the storm drains. Not only is this harmful for our waterways, but animal waste is a viable source of food for rats. Starve out the rat population, but cutting off a food source.

5. Street Sweeping. Move your car, and let the street sweepers service your block. If you don't know your street sweeping day, call 311. Once you find out your date, let your neighbors know too.

City Trees must battle many urban hazards. From air pollution, to dogs and people, being a new tree in Baltimore can be the pits! But it doesn't have to be this way. You can help keep Baltimore's street trees healthy by following these simple tips:

1. Water your tree. Luckily mother nature has been helping us out in this department, but when a stretch of dry weather hits, our trees need water. Watering trees is the most important thing you can do for a newly planted tree. Just like people, trees need to stay hydrated.

2. Keep weeds away. Weeds are not welcomed in guests in tree pits. If left unintended weeds can stress or kill your tree. Try to remove weeds as quickly as possible.

3. Feed the can, man. BMORE Beautiful and put trash and litter where it belongs. Keeping the tree pit free of trash and litter not only ensures the health of the tree but it upholds the visual integrity your block.

4. Planting. Perennials and annuals are a beautiful addition to a tree pit, and a natural buddy for your new tree.

Expanding and protecting the tree canopy in Baltimore is everyone's responsibility. Trees clean the air, prevent soil erosion, prevent water pollution and cool the streets on hot summer days. Like the Lorax, we must speak for the trees.

Clean Block Tip:
Make sure you put your own trash out correctly. A lot of residents would never deliberately litter and are pretty cavalier about how they put their garbage out for collection.

1. Place trash inside of a trash bag that is tied up tightly, inside of your municipal trash can and make sure the lid is closed.

2. Don't set additional trash bags on top of your municipal trash can. If you have a lot of trash that day, put additional bag in separate 32 gallon trash can with a lid.

3. Maximize your collection day and recycle. Start simple with cardboard, paper, and plastic. Call 311 if you don't know your recycling day. Recycling Bins are available for purchase at local Ace Hardware Stores & will be on sale this Saturday August 18th at Poly. (Plus it's a free community Shred day! Shred up to 2 bags of documents!)

4. Don't put your trash out until 6 p.m. on the day before your trash collection.

5. Pick up any loose litter that is in the front or rear of your home. Check the storm drains too! Clogged storm drains lead to flooded blocks.

These are just some helpful ways you can BMOREBeautiful and work with Baltimore City Department of Public Works to Keep Baltimore Beautiful.
