ABET recognizes June as LGBTQIA2S+ Pride Month and encourages reflection on how we build learning environments where every student feels welcome, respected and able to succeed.
When the roughly one in ten postsecondary students who identify as LGBTQIA2S+ or gender-diverse (based on the most recent available federal postsecondary data) feel safe, respected and visible, STEM education becomes stronger, more creative and more innovative. Pride Month is also a reminder that students are more likely to persist when they can see a future for themselves in their chosen field.
What seems like small choices can have a huge impact on students’ experiences. ABET encourages educators and institutions to foster holistic learning environments through actions such as using people-first language, respecting names and pronouns, addressing bias and ensuring all students can fully participate without hiding part of themselves.
A stronger future for STEM is one where everyone can participate fully, contribute openly and feel they belong. 🌈
