Our Story

The Julie Community Center was founded in 1975 and incorporated in 1976 as a nonprofit organization of 501(c)(3) status. Historically, the southeast sector of Baltimore was a working-class community, but according to the 1990 census had suffered between 1980 and 1990 a 48.5% loss of industrial jobs and is consequently suffering a high rate of unemployment. Other statistics include a decline in commercial strips, and 11% vacancy rate and housing, and a shift from owner to renter occupancy in a number of neighborhoods.

The Julie Center was created in order to help develop groups and projects that not only combat the above set of problems, but also serve as instruments for fostering neighborhood pride, participation, and self-determination.

In its 45th year of service, The Julie Center has maintained its original purpose and aided thousands of individuals and families. The current mission states that “The Julie Community Center is a multipurpose center working with Southeast and East Baltimore residents, in particular those on low or fixed incomes, to help them access needed resources and support, and develop instruments that both combat poverty and urban decline, and foster individual and neighborhood pride, participation, and self-determination.” We are able to commit to this through offering four categories of aid:
