September is Kinship Care Month.

Kinship caregivers are relatives, family friends, or other adults with a meaningful connection to a child who step in to provide care for them when their parents are unable to. They provide stability, support, and a safe place to call home.

We’re marking the month with education, outreach, community events, and resources for kinship families across the state.

For Child Support Awareness Month, DHS staff from across the department took part in a hands-on exercise designed to better understand the challenges customers may face as they work to meet their child support obligations and build stability for their families.

The exercise gave staff across DHS an opportunity to experience how these challenges can intersect — and a reminder that keeping the customer at the center of our work means understanding the circumstances they are navigating.

Watch this video of our Child Support Administration simulation to see how child support goes beyond the money.

It’s official: Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller have proclaimed that August 2026 is National Child Support Awareness Month in Maryland!

The formal proclamation recognizes the essential contributions of child support programs in fostering family stability, financial security, and brighter futures for our children to thrive.

We’re also proud to share a citation from Acting Secretary Stacy L. Rodgers recognizing the dedication of Maryland’s child support professionals and the important work they do every day to support families across our state.

Court-ordered child support is a legal obligation — and an informal agreement between parents does not change the amount ordered by the court.

If circumstances change and a parent believes the child support amount should be different, contact Child Support Services to determine if you qualify for modification: dhs.maryland.gov/child-support-services/contact-csa/.
