During the late evening hours on September 27, 2008, Maryland State Police Medevac Helicopter Trooper-2 based out of Joint Based Andrews Air Force Base departed for a serious motor vehicle collision in Waldorf, Maryland. Two patients needed advanced care and were flown in the medevac helicopter, along with EMT Tonya Mallard, who was assisting in patient care. The destination was the Level II Trauma Center, Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland.
In the early hours of September 28, 2008, Trooper-2 encountered poor weather while attempting to deliver the patients to the trauma center and subsequently crashed. After a ground search was initiated, the wreckage was found inside of Walker Mill Regional Park. Pilot Stephen H. Bunker (Retired MSP Corporal), TFC/Flight Paramedic Mickey C. Lippy, and Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department EMT Tonya M. Mallard were killed in the helicopter crash. One of the patients, Ashley Younger also died during the helicopter crash, while Jordan Wells survived the crash.
First Sergeant James Lyles, Southern Region Supervisor for the Maryland State Police Aviation Command is seen in the picture visiting the Memorial Site. These photographs are from the Trooper-2 Memorial Site located along the entrance to the walking trail, along with a picture of the granite stone located at the crash site. This Memorial honors the memories and sacrifices of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, and the families and friends of both patients. While they may be gone, the family and friends of all involved will never forget our Fallen Heroes.
