I would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to the Agape Chapter members, for the appreciation plaque I received on Saturday, April 29, 2022. I am so grateful and honored to the members and will continue to do my best to support the Agape Chapter, RIII Council and the National Organization of Blacks In Government.

During the late evening hours on September 27, 2008, Maryland State Police Medevac Helicopter Trooper-2 based out of Joint Based Andrews Air Force Base departed for a serious motor vehicle collision in Waldorf, Maryland. Two patients needed advanced care and were flown in the medevac helicopter, along with EMT Tonya Mallard, who was assisting in patient care. The destination was the Level II Trauma Center, Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland.

In the early hours of September 28, 2008, Trooper-2 encountered poor weather while attempting to deliver the patients to the trauma center and subsequently crashed. After a ground search was initiated, the wreckage was found inside of Walker Mill Regional Park. Pilot Stephen H. Bunker (Retired MSP Corporal), TFC/Flight Paramedic Mickey C. Lippy, and Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department EMT Tonya M. Mallard were killed in the helicopter crash. One of the patients, Ashley Younger also died during the helicopter crash, while Jordan Wells survived the crash.

First Sergeant James Lyles, Southern Region Supervisor for the Maryland State Police Aviation Command is seen in the picture visiting the Memorial Site. These photographs are from the Trooper-2 Memorial Site located along the entrance to the walking trail, along with a picture of the granite stone located at the crash site. This Memorial honors the memories and sacrifices of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, and the families and friends of both patients. While they may be gone, the family and friends of all involved will never forget our Fallen Heroes.

Greetings BIG Members,

For the past several weeks, Mr. Martin Jones, Agape Chapter member, provided security to Ms. Opal Lee, coordinator of the Juneteenth National Holiday walk and other events throughout the country. On this day, President Joe Biden, sign into law, the 11th federal holiday. Effective immediately, federal employees will receive a paid day off on June 19th.

It is important that we recognize Juneteenth and its significance to the African-American community and this country. Let’s teach our children the importance of Juneteenth, which is the second federal holiday to honor Black History.

Thank you, Ms. Lee and other organizers, for their dedication, commitment and hard work for Juneteenth. Mr. Jones, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to support all the Juneteenth events and pose with Vice President Kamala Harris. Job Well Done!

This year's Annual Blacks In Government National Training Institute (NTI) will take place August 23 - 26, 2021, on a virtual platform due to COVID restrictions that greatly impacted our ability to host an in person training event this year. With many of the federal departments and agencies still working mandatory telework schedules and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still warning against large in person gatherings, we know this is the best way to meet the training needs and demands of our members and registrants.
This year's Virtual Training Institute theme is "Training Matters – Roadmap To Securing Your Career Goals!'' And, we have four scheduled days filled with government leaders as guest speakers and workshops covering leadership development, career advancement, networking and mental/health resilience. We are looking forward to seeing you in attendance while you are mapping out your career goals. BIG is committed to providing you the same quality training as we have provided the last 42 years. So, please join us as we continue that commitment again this year.
Online registration is now open! If you have any questions or have not received your registration confirmation email in a few weeks, please contact the registration committee at [email protected].
Registration Rate:
• Members - $399
• Non-Members - $599
• Retirees - $175
*REGISTRATION DISCLAIMER: You must register with the correct registration type noted above. Your registration is considered pending until approved by BIG. For additional information visit: www.BIGNET.ORG.
