With 37 stations, BCFD responds to nearly 235,000 emergencies a year. Led by Chief Niles Ford, the Baltimore City Fire Department serves a geographic area of 81 square miles and a population of more than 640,000 residents. The department has over 1800 members who are divided into two management branches – Emergency Operations and Planning and Administration. The department responds to more than 23

5,000 emergency 911 calls per year. Prior to 1858 Baltimore’s fire department was an all-volunteer organization. In December of 1859 the City Council officially created the city’s first paid, professional fire department made up of one Truck and Four Engine Companies. Eventually, the Baltimore City Fire Department replaced the all-volunteer force completely. In June of 1927 five ambulances were placed in service and thus began the EMS Division. By 1938 the Fire Incendiary Bureau is created which eventually became the Fire Investigation Bureau headed by the Fire Marshal. In 2008, all the supply, maintenance and procurement functions of the department were consolidated into one Logistics Division, adding the final piece to what is today Baltimore City Fire Department.

Shortly after 1500 hours, Baltimore City Fire Department responded to a water rescue on the 700 blk of Pratt St. Upon arrival units located one adult male in the water and immediately activated the BCFD Dive Team. Divers entered and conducted a rapid search, successfully locating and removing the patient. EMS personnel provided on‑scene medical care and transported the patient to a local hospital.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., Baltimore City Fire Department was dispatched to the 2200 block of Guilford Ave. for reports of a dwelling fire. Upon arrival, units reported fire showing from a 2½‑story middle‑of‑group rowhome, with fire on the second and third floors.

The fire extended to adjacent dwellings, prompting a third alarm. Members are actively operating on the scene.

Rear conditions showed fire with extension through the roofline.

No additional information is available at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Updates will be provided as they become available.
