Jesuit Volunteer Corps Give us one year, and we'll give you a sense of purpose to guide every year that follows. or internationally.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps matches young leaders in roles providing vital service for 1-2 years with an organization serving people in need in the U.S. Jesuit Volunteers live in an intentional community with other volunteers, build deep relationships, and gain valuable professional experience while fostering personal growth as leaders committed to faith in action. e, framed within four core values of the Jesuit tradition: spirituality, simple lifestyle, community, and social justice. JVC incorporates five programmatic retreats and mentorship from local and national staff to create an experience that further prepares you for a future fighting for what matters. This formation program equips Jesuit Volunteers with a set of leadership tools and access to a network of over 11,000 accomplished alumni supporters. The Jesuit Volunteer Corps draws inspiration and direction from the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers. Better known as the “Jesuits,” the order was founded almost 500 years ago by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who challenged others to live as “contemplatives in action,” balancing between reflective prayer and work for justice.

It’s Our Annual Day of Giving!

👋Meet the JVs of the Casa Ignatius Community in Sacramento, better known as Casa Iggy.

👉July 31st serves as the feast day of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits. We choose his feast day to celebrate our JVs finishing their year of service while preparing for our next cohort to begin theirs just a few weeks later.

🗣️Listen to the stories of the JVs and how they’ve been changed by the values of JVC. Then consider helping us reach our goal of raising $30,000 by clicking the link! —> https://bit.ly/JVCdayofgiving. Every dollar goes to support our volunteers serving throughout the United States and living by the four values of Ignatian spirituality, simple living, community, and social justice.

♥️We are all called to make the world a better place through our service to others, intentional reflection, and generous actions. We ask you to make a gift to JVC, which will directly impact our programming and volunteers’ experiences. And on behalf of JVC Staff, we THANK YOU!

A glimpse into DisOrientation👁️👁️

JVs celebrated their DisO Retreat last week in Stony Point, New York. If you’ve been to DisO, you know that it’s full of raw emotion. JVs come together one last time to reconnect, reflect, and prepare themselves as they soon become FJVs. Our Programs Team intentionally plans DisO so each JV gets to reflect on their experience, honor the relationships they’ve formed, and prepare for a period of transition and new beginnings. DisO always concludes with Commissioning Mass and a Commissioning Blessing.🙏 It’s these traditions and retreats that connect us so deeply as a JVC family.

What memories do you have from your DisO Retreat? Where did your DisO take place? FJVs & current JVs, let us hear about it! Share some of your memories below!👇

Taking the time to shout-out our Programs Team!🎉

The JV experience would not be possible without the efforts of our incredible Programs Team. So much behind-the-scenes work goes into creating such a formative year for the Jesuit Volunteers. From planning Orientation to ensuring the in-city houses are ready for move-in. From organizing FIVE intentional retreats throughout the year to visiting communities in-person during the fall and spring. The Programs Team has not only been with us the whole way along, but has made it HAPPEN.👏

Thank you to Laura, Ashley, William, and Ben for your open minds and open hearts, supporting JVs along their transformative journeys. You’ve helped countless JVs make memories that’ll last them a lifetime. We appreciate you!❤️🫵

❝Sharing space, time, and resources — as challenging as it can be — does not have to be viewed as a compromise of individuality; it can also be a freeing and formative way we learn to integrate ourselves into community. While easier said than done, this lesson cannot be overstated. Living in community requests and eventually requires that we make choices to take care of ourselves without deprioritizing the needs and desires of others. In so doing, we share rides to work, remembering as often as we can that brief smiles during rushed commutes carry us through slow days. With tired hands we cook warm meals, and tired still, offer our ears for listening. God and my housemates know I didn’t show up like this each day, especially before 7:30am. We do as best we can on good days. And we make the most out of hard ones.

The experience of being a Jesuit Volunteer is deeply humanizing. Somewhere along the way we’re changed by the ways we show up or fail to for one another, our communities, and ourselves. Only looking back on this year, can I begin to appreciate the value of community. Sharing space and time and resources requests and eventually requires that we grow right where we’re planted.❞

It’s that time of year💔

Join us in prayer as we prepare to say goodbye to our 2023-2024 Jesuits Volunteers. The JVs are coming together this week for one final retreat, DisOriention.🙏

DisOrientation or “DisO” is organized around the movements of the Spiritual Exercises. It provides a forum for volunteers to reflect on their experiences from the year, giving time and resources for reconciliation within communities or between volunteers. JVs will identify and explore issues related to closure, good-byes, transition and grief. JVs will also have time to explore the joys and challenges of continuing to integrate the four values of Spirituality, Simple Living, Community & Social Justice after JVC.

DisO is a space for JVC to recognize, cherish and celebrate the goodness and the growth of volunteers and to welcome them into the family of FJVs.🤲🕊️

❝Being a JV at feels like home—a place where I feel safe to be myself, surrounded by lovely coworkers, enthusiastic kids and a network of schools across Chicago.

Commuting to schools across Chicago exposed to me how racially segregated these schools and neighborhoods are, especially in the West and South side of Chicago. In 2013 the Chicago Public School system closed 50 schools in these areas—primarily impacting Black students (88%) and teachers (70%) (Ewing, 2018). These school closings showed not only the lack of disinvestment in these schools but also a lack of care for the students, faculty and greater community.

I wish CPS saw the amount of care, love and support that I saw in the educators and faculty at the schools I worked at: Mr Charles Myers at Catalyst Circle Rock, Mr Lawrence Bynum at KIPP One Academy, Principal Zully Jimenez at Acero-Casas and countless others who show up every day for these kids to create a positive school culture and make Girls in the Game possible.

I wish CPS saw the joy, resilience, creativity and intelligence that I had the pleasure to witness in the students I worked with. Their curiosity for life, along with their compassionate, big hearts made me want to show up every day and do my best.

I’m grateful for my time with Girls in the Game and will always remember the experiences I gained, along with kindness, love and generosity shown from each person I met. Thank you for creating a safe space, reminding me how to have fun and helping me heal my inner girl.💜❞

June is the Month of the Sacred Heart❤️‍🔥

❝In the Bible, the heart is the very center of a person. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us of the depths of Jesus’ love for us. The Lord so loves us that he underwent his passion and death to save us from sin. His heart is aflame with love for us and waits for us to receive his love and return it in kind. We can see this in the depiction of the Sacred Heart, a heart pierced by a lance, wrapped in the crown of thorns and surmounted by the cross but also burning with his desire to save us.

As we ponder the Sacred Heart of Jesus during the month of June, I invite you to allow the Lord to transform your hearts.❞♡✝️

06/06/2024

❝One of my favorite shirts reads “Love Changes Things” on the front, followed by the “Fall In Love, Stay In Love” prayer by Pedro Arupe on the back. Whenever I wear this shirt to work, I am often stopped by guests who want to read the back, or just want to affirm that “yes, love does change everything”.

I work as a Housing Care and Wellness Navigator at Depaul USA New Orleans. The majority of my days are split between housing case management, wellness programming (art/music therapy and meditations), and building relationships with others. My work is deeply relational, and it is through these relationships, with community-mates, clients, and strangers, that I have learned the most this year.

There is a line in the “Fall In Love, Stay In Love” prayer that references how things can both “break your heart” and “amaze you with joy and gratitude”. During my JV year, I have come to know that these emotions of joy and suffering are not always isolated. In the stories of those I have met this year, and even in my own, it is clear that these two often go hand-in-hand.

I have witnessed this type of love Pedro Arrupe talks about in the form of painting alongside someone during Thursday Art Therapy, to singing along to the best 80s classics in the work car, or in moments I am caught off guard and am not sure what to say but simply sit and listen as someone shares their life with me. It is through these authentic human-to-human connections where I have experienced first-hand the many ways “Love Changes Things”.

Love holds the power to overcome barriers, challenge perspectives, and transform hearts, in the face of adversity or immense joy. Most importantly, love can build resilient communities, rooted in trust, which is something I think we all need more of.❞

April Showers Bring May Flowers🪷

The JVs are in full bloom as they got loud, and then got quiet for silent retreat.🙂‍↔️🤫

Prior to entering into silence, the East Coast JVs met up in the City of Brotherly Love. Special shoutout to the for hosting the 1st Annual LOUD Retreat. To quote the , after being loud, ❝we then entered into silence and reconnected with ourselves and became even closer with one another in ways we weren’t able to see in the noise.❞🙏

captured the essence of Silent Retreat in a nutshell. Some words from Casa Thea Bowman: ❝We were able to take time for reflection, connecting with ourselves, being with nature, engaging with the JVC values, and developing new goals and strategies to round out our JV year! So grateful for the beautiful space, amazing people, and profound support from our JVC family. Here’s to pools, scorpion/spiders, nerds rope, saguaro cacti, sunrises, and community.❞♥️🦂

❝With a recharge of spirituality, community, social justice, and simple living we are heading into the last 3 months of the year with joy and excitement. We have a lot of adventures packed into the rest of the year so stay tuned!❞ Well said, 👏

05/22/2024

❝In my first weeks at the Migrant Farmworkers Assistance Fund, I learned a phrase that has become indispensable: “Gracias a Dios, y luego a Doña Gloria.” In English, “Thanks be to God, and then to Doña Gloria.” The doña in question is a long-time client of ours who is almost certainly the most generous person I have ever met.

When I first met Gloria, Maggie Runde and I were picking up some of her homemade tamales for a picnic celebrating our summer programming. We’d been sent with a gift card, some notes, and the plastic takeout containers Gloria uses to package her food for others.

When Maggie tried to hand her the gift card as thanks, Gloria balked. “No no,” she said (I’m translating here), “Don’t thank me, thank God! God provides me with everything I need, no need to pay me. Absolutely not.”

After a bit of back and forth, Maggie tried a new angle — maybe the gift card was another one of God’s blessings, which she could use to pass those blessings on. Gloria accepted this, albeit reluctantly. She reminded us at least three more times to thank God first before thanking her.

I have often struggled to ask things of others, or resisted accepting things when they are offered — Gloria and I are similar in that way, I think. I used to freeze when she’d try to send me home with food, unsure of how to respond. Isn’t that taking advantage of her kindness?

Getting to know Gloria has taught me that accepting someone’s generosity doesn’t mean taking advantage of them — sometimes it means letting them take care of you so you can care for them in return.

We set up doctor’s appointments, and Gloria sends us home with tamales and gorditas (and some cookies for the road). We accompany her, and she accompanies us.

Gracias a Dios, y luego a Doña Gloria.❞

Thank you for your prayers & intentions as the JVs wrap up their Silent Retreats🌠🐢

Here are just some of the many beautiful photos shared by our Area Managers who coordinated and led the Jesuit Volunteers into several days of silence and contemplation.🙏As the JVs entered into silence, they lit a candle for each of their intentions and let water wash away that which they wish to let go of during retreat. Pictured in the second photo are JVs from the Eastern Region concluding silence and coming together in celebration and gratitude.

Do you remember your Silent Retreat as a JV? Or can you envision yourself becoming a JV and experiencing the joy of Silent Retreat?

Celebrating FJVs!🎉

JVC Celebrates Board Member and FJV Marisa Hernández-Stern (Atlanta, GA 2005-06) on her appointment as a Judge with the Los Angeles Superior Court. Marisa joins a family of dedicated judges with her father, Judge Michael L. Stern and her brother, Judge Benjamin P. Hernández-Stern accompanying Marisa at her swearing-in ceremony. Many friends and family attended the event, including fellow Board Member and FJV, Joseph Tomás McKellar (Boston, MA 2004-05). Marisa has been lauded as a champion of public service and justice, with an emphasis on diversity. Among many achievements, Marisa is a passionate advocate for young Latinas discerning a path to serve as a judicial clerk and becoming a judge.

❝Becoming a judge is the culmination of a multitude and lifetime of large and small gestures of support, encouragement, and love. This milestone has not been reached alone and I thank my family, friends, and colleagues for accompanying me on this journey. I look forward to continuing my career in public service. I remain steadfast in my commitment to the pursuit of justice, equal application of the law, and affording respect and dignity to all who come before me.❞

JV April Moments🩵

With just about three months left, the JVs continue to remind us the importance of community, spirituality, simple living, and forging a path towards a more just and equitable world.

JVs from the New Orleans Community () invited family to visit this Spring. It can be difficult to explain what it means & how it feels to be a Jesuit Volunteer, so inviting family is truly one of the best ways to share your experience. Bring your family to your placements, show them your home, walk around the city with them. These moments are so special and will eventually turn into memories that you’ll carry with you through life.😇

One of the biggest moments of the month was the historic total solar eclipse. Our JVs in the Midwest & East, including The Cleveland Community () were able to catch a glimpse of this beautiful moment. The Cleveland Community brought art supplies, snacks, and of course, the best vibes to the city park and were able to share this moment of watching the solar eclipse together. Meanwhile in the West, the California communities, including .sanfrancisco, and continue finding ways to spend time in each other’s company! Road-tripping together, hiking at Joshua Tree National Park, and delighting in life on a beach towel in the sun.

Disclaimer: These photos only capture the big, “photo-worthy” moments. There are countless joy-filled in-between moments that simply cannot be conveyed through the lens. Thank you JVs for bringing us into your world, and sharing pieces of it with us!🪷🦋🌷🪺

Holding the JVs in prayer as they prepare for their Silent Retreat🧡

The JVs attend five retreats each program year. These formation retreats provide volunteers the space for meaningful reflection guided by Ignatian tradition. Silent retreat is the fourth retreat of the year, following Orientation, Fall Day of Reflection, and Re-Orientation.

Although the name may sound intimidating, Silent Retreat offers a welcoming space for the JVs to check in with themselves — in mind, body, and spirit. This check in is timely as the JVs begin to consider where they’re heading as a soon-to-be FJV.🕊️

Thank you to our Programs Team and Spiritual Advisors who are present and make this retreat possible.

❝This year has not only cultivated all the experiences I expected, but so many more. You expect to relocate with total strangers to start a job dedicated to serving others. But you don’t expect the new location to become home. The strangers to become some of your best friends. Or the job to serve you in ways you never saw coming.

I work at Mustard Seed, an emergency school for children preschool through 8th grade experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. As an outreach coordinator, I advocate for families to get housing, food and shelter, and anything else they need to find stability in their lives. It has been a privilege to listen to their stories and get to know them on a personal level.

My year in JVC has been transformative. It has taught me about human dignity, innate kindness, and to seek small miracles everyday. I see these small miracles working in the lives of our guests everyday; and feel them with every hug from a student. It is so humbling to be working somewhere that I am supposed to be the teacher; but am simultaneously always learning.

I have so much gratitude and love for my housemates. Feelings most profound when laughing together in the living room, going on day trips and hikes, or sitting together at the table for a meal. The ‘small’ things... are actually the things that matter most.❞
