Watch vs. Warning!

Do you know the difference between a Watch and a Warning when it comes to severe weather in the spring? Explained with lemonade!

Lemonade Watch: All the ingredients are gathered in your kitchen. Fresh lemons are sitting on the counter, along with ice cubes, sugar, and water ready for mixing. Everything is calm. Just like a severe weather watch, this means conditions are favorable for storms. You should be alert and prepared, but there is no immediate danger yet.

Lemonade Warning: A pitcher of homemade lemonade is ready to be served. Friends or family grab cups, straws are flying, and the first refreshing sip is about to be taken. It is time to act fast or your glass might be empty. A severe weather warning works the same way. Danger is imminent, and you need to take action immediately to stay safe.

From the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS):
A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Georgia and South Carolina until 1 PM EDT.
More information from US National Weather Service Columbia South Carolina: A watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may produce tornadoes. A line of showers and thunderstorms will sweep through the region this morning, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts and perhaps a brief tornado or two. Remain weather aware this morning and have at least two ways to receive NWS warnings, should they be needed.

As temperatures plunge again tonight statewide, any snow or ice that melted today will refreeze, creating patches of black ice. This is extremely dangerous!

We are urging everyone to stay off the roads until conditions improve.

If essential travel is required, please be sure to visit 511sc.org or download the 511SC Traffic App to check road conditions.

If you come across SCDOT workers or first responders, please move over and give them plenty of space to work safely.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Winter Weather Update: Bamberg County Announces Delayed Government Operations

BAMBERG, S.C. — Bamberg County officials continue to closely monitor winter weather conditions following a coordination call with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) and the National Weather Service (NWS).

According to state and federal partners, weather conditions across South Carolina are improving, with most snowfall now complete. However, lingering snow combined with prolonged cold temperatures continues to impact roadway conditions in many areas.

There are currently no significant power outages reported statewide. Snowfall totals across the state range from 2 to 11 inches, with some locations reporting over one foot of accumulation.

Wind gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour may lead to blowing or drifting snow on previously cleared roadways. Cold temperatures persist, and wind chills are expected to continue affecting many areas, particularly in the Upstate.

Officials also warn that melting snow will refreeze overnight, creating hazardous black ice conditions on roadways and sidewalks. While slightly warmer temperatures are anticipated on Monday, nighttime lows are expected to drop significantly once again.

🚨 Due to ongoing safety concerns, Bamberg County Government offices will operate on a delayed start on Monday, February 2, 2026, opening at 12:00 noon. Bamberg County landfills will open at 8:00 a.m., and LAD sites will also open at 12:00 noon.

“Although conditions are gradually improving, winter weather impacts remain a concern, especially during overnight and early morning hours,” said Bamberg County Administrator Joey Preston. “The delayed start allows our crews additional time to address road conditions and helps ensure the safety of county employees and residents. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we continue to monitor conditions.”

Bamberg County urges residents to limit travel when possible, use extreme caution if travel is necessary, and continue to monitor official county page or website www.bamberg county.sc.gov for the latest updates.

For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergency assistance, residents should dial (803) 245-3000.
